What a survival server needs

Survival worlds grow for weeks or months. Plan for the world you will have later, not only the one you start with.

Memory grows with the world

Bases, structures and tamed creatures stay in memory while the world runs. Start with the size the game page suggests and plan a step up as your world fills.

Room for saves and backups

Saves get bigger over time, and some games keep several copies. Leave disk space beyond the install size for saves, backups and updates.

Wipes and resets

Some communities reset the world on a schedule, as many Rust servers do around its forced updates. Decide early whether your server keeps one world or starts fresh.

Mods change the size

Mod frameworks such as Oxide or BepInEx and CurseForge mods add memory and disk use. Test new mods on a copy of your world before you add them to the live one.

Player limits and crossplay

Each game sets its own player limit, and some let console players join PC servers. Check the game page before you invite your group.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
How much RAM does a survival server need?

It depends on the game, the world, the player count and the mods. Valheim starts at about 4 GB, ARK: Survival Ascended at 8–12 GB per map, and Rust and Palworld need 12 GB or more. Each game page has a size table with its sources.

Can I bring my existing world to the server?

For most survival games, yes: the world is a save folder or file you upload to the server. Each game page explains where the save lives and what to watch for, such as matching game versions.

Does the world keep running when everyone logs off?

The server stays online around the clock, so your group can join at any time. Whether time passes in the world without players depends on the game and its server settings.

Can I use mods on a survival server?

Most survival games support server mods, for example Oxide or Carbon for Rust, CurseForge for ARK: Survival Ascended and BepInEx for Valheim. Some mods must also be installed by every player; the game page says which.

What is a wipe on a survival server?

A wipe resets the map, the player progress or both. Some games need a new map after major updates, and many communities wipe on a schedule. On your own server you decide when, unless a game update requires a new world.

Can console players join a survival server?

Some games allow it. Valheim, ARK: Survival Ascended and Palworld let console players join PC dedicated servers when crossplay is set up, and 7 Days to Die does so within its crossplay rules. Check each game page.

How do I protect my world from loss?

Back up the save folder regularly, especially before game updates and mod changes, and download a copy now and then. You then always have a world you can restore.

Not sure how big your survival world will get?
