Moodle hosting plans

Tell us how many learners you have and how many use Moodle at the same time, and our team will recommend the right plan. Or start today on our Linux web hosting and install Moodle with our guide.

How big a plan does Moodle need?

What counts is how many learners are online at the same time, for example during a quiz, more than how many accounts you have.

Starting points: Moodle publishes software requirements rather than server sizes. Course files, video and the number of learners online at once decide the size.

Everything Moodle needs to run well

Moodle needs the right PHP, a data folder outside the web root and a cron job every minute. All of it is yours to set.

Start on web hosting

Our Linux web hosting runs PHP sites on LiteSpeed and NVMe storage, with free SSL and a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk.

The PHP version you need

Choose the PHP version per domain and turn on the extensions the system lists, on web hosting or on your own server.

Cron every minute

Moodle sends notifications and runs its tasks from cron: add the job in your control panel or in crontab on your server.

Data outside the web root

Keep moodledata out of every folder a domain serves, and serve only Moodle’s public folder from Moodle 5.1 on.

HTTPS on every page

Free Let’s Encrypt certificates for your domain, so every page, from the login to the checkout, loads over HTTPS.

Staging next to production

Run a copy of the site on a second subdomain to test updates, themes and extensions before they reach your visitors.

Backups included

Free weekly and monthly backups come with every VPS and VDS plan. For data that changes every day, keep copies of your own as well.

Room to grow

Start on a VPS and move to a bigger plan, a VDS with NVMe storage or a dedicated server when your data and users grow.

Launch Moodle in four steps

Order the app preinstalled on your server, or install it yourself with our guide.

  1. Choose your plan

Pick Linux web hosting for a small or medium site, or a VPS in the size from the table above for a busy one.

  2. Prepare the folders

Upload Moodle to a folder of its own, set the domain’s document root to its public folder and create moodledata next to it.

  3. Run the installer

Open your domain and enter the data directory, the database details and the administrator account.

  4. Add the cron job

Add a cron job that runs Moodle’s cron script every minute, with the command from Moodle’s documentation.

Step-by-step setup guides

Install, secure and update the app with our guides, written for current Ubuntu and Debian releases.

PHP applications install the same way on web hosting: the right PHP version, a database, the files in the right folder and the web installer. This guide gives the shared steps and the extra steps each application needs.

  • Product docs Change the PHP version and PHP limits on web hosting

Each site can run the PHP version it needs. Set it per domain, enable the extensions your application asks for and adjust the PHP limits for uploads and memory, then check the result.

Your hosting account is backed up by us, but your own copy is what you control. Download backups from the panel, store them elsewhere, and restore files, databases or the whole account when you need to.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Can Moodle run on web hosting?

Yes, for a few classes. Our Linux web hosting gives Moodle the PHP version, a database and cron jobs. Choose a VPS when many learners are online at once, for example during quizzes, or when you need settings a shared server does not allow.

What changed with the public folder in Moodle 5.1?

From Moodle 5.1, the web server serves only Moodle’s public folder. Set the document root of the domain or subdomain to that folder; an upgrade to 5.1 or newer does not continue until it is set.

Which PHP version does Moodle need?

Moodle 5.2 and 5.3 need PHP 8.3 or 8.4, and Moodle 5.1 runs on 8.2 to 8.4. Set memory_limit to at least 96 MB; 128 MB is recommended.

Why does Moodle need a cron job?

Moodle sends forum and assignment notifications, cleans up and runs its scheduled tasks from cron. Without it, emails and many background tasks stop. Run it every minute.

Which Moodle version should I choose?

Moodle 5.3 LTS for new sites: it was released on 5 October 2026 with long-term support. Moodle 5.0 is out of support and Moodle 5.1 gets security fixes only, so plan your upgrade.

Can you move my site to HyperDC?

Migration is free on our Linux VPS plans. We copy the files and the database and update the configuration, and you switch DNS once the site works on the new server.
