If your domain's DNS is managed at Cloudflare, your Windows hosting service can write the records it needs in your zone. You create a token in Cloudflare that may edit only that zone, and connect it once.

Before you start

  • Your domain uses Cloudflare's nameservers.
  • Your Windows hosting service is active.

Step 1: Create the token in Cloudflare

  1. In the Cloudflare dashboard, open My Profile › API Tokens and select Create Token.
  2. Next to Edit zone DNS, select Use template.
  3. Under Zone Resources, choose Include, Specific zone and your domain.
  4. Select Continue to summary, then Create Token, and copy the token. Cloudflare shows it only once.

Step 2: Connect it to your service

  1. On your service page, open the DNS tab and select Connect Cloudflare.
  2. Paste the token and select Check Token.
  3. Select Review Changes. What will change at Cloudflare lists the records; select Write Records.

The service writes the A record for your site and the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for your mail in your Cloudflare zone. Afterwards the Cloudflare card offers Update Now and Disconnect.

Verify: select Check Records in the DNS tab, and in Cloudflare the DNS records of your domain show the new A, MX and TXT records.

Troubleshooting

The token is refused. Check that it uses the Edit zone DNS template and includes this domain's zone. Create a new one if you are not sure.

Frequently asked questions

Which permissions does the token need?

Use Cloudflare's Edit zone DNS template and limit it to the zone of your domain.

Which records are written?

The A record for your site, and the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for your mail.

Do I have to use Cloudflare?

No. At any other DNS provider, point your domain's A record to the server yourself; see point a domain to your server.
