Backups let you go back to an earlier state of your site after a mistake, a failed update or an attack. The Backups tab of your service page makes them when you ask and on a schedule.

Step 1: Create a backup

  1. Open Backups and select Create Backup.
  2. Choose what it holds: Website files, Databases and Mail, and add a Note such as Before the theme change.
  3. Confirm. The list shows the backup as Running, then Ready.

Verify: the backup appears in the list with its Date, Type Manual, what it Contains and its Size.

Step 2: Download a copy

Select Download next to the backup and keep the file on your computer or another storage. A copy away from the server is the one you can always count on.

Step 3: Restore a backup

  1. Select Restore next to the backup.
  2. Choose the parts to restore: Website files, Databases or Mail.
  3. Select Restore And Replace.

What you choose is replaced with the state in the backup, and changes made to it since then are lost. Everything you do not choose stays as it is.

Verify: your site shows the state of the backup's date.

Step 4: Set the automatic backups

Open the Schedule panel in the same tab:

  • Every day, Every week and Every month switch each kind on or off.
  • Daily backups to keep, Weekly backups to keep and Monthly backups to keep set how many of each are kept. When a kind has more backups than it may keep, the oldest are deleted automatically.
  • Start time sets when the backups begin.

Select Save Schedule. The list shows the automatic backups with the type Daily, Weekly or Monthly.

Frequently asked questions

Are backups made automatically?

Yes. The Schedule makes backups every day, week or month at the start time you set, and deletes the oldest ones beyond the number you keep.

Can I restore only a database?

Yes. When you restore, choose only the parts you need. Everything you do not choose stays as it is.

Should I also keep my own copy?

Yes. Download a backup now and then and store it somewhere else, so you have a copy that does not depend on the server.

What happens to changes made after the backup?

The parts you restore go back to the state in the backup, so changes made to them since then are lost. Make a new backup first if you may need them.
