Wurm Unlimited plans are being prepared

How much RAM does a Wurm Unlimited server need?

Players, creatures and the size of what they build decide the load. A cluster needs resources for every server in it.

The developer publishes no server hardware figures; these are conservative starting points for a Java game server. Large worlds, many creatures and mods need more.

Templates, settings, clusters and mods

Shape your Wurm world in the bundled Server Management window or with launch options.

Adventure or Creative

Adventure brings a prebuilt map with NPCs, a tutorial and PvP on by default; Creative starts on a blank map without villages or NPCs.

Server Management window

Set skill gain rates, action timers, PvP or PvE and creature counts in the bundled window, or pass options such as servername and maxplayers at launch.

Server clusters

Link several servers through a login server and RMI so players can travel between them; each extra server uses its own ports.

GM power levels

Give trusted players a power level from Hero to Implementor in the Players tab; the admin password unlocks in-game admin commands.

Community mods

Ago’s mod loader adds server mods shared on the official forum; players need client mods only when a mod changes the client.

Password and bans

Protect the server with serverpassword and ban players by Steam ID.

Set up your Wurm Unlimited server

Four steps to your own corner of Wurm.

  1. Choose a template and size

Adventure or Creative, PvE or PvP: pick the memory for your community from the table above.

  2. Pick a location

  3. Set your rules

Name the server, set the player limit, admin password and server password, and tune skill gain and timers.

  4. Invite your players

Once the Steam query ports are open, players find the server in the in-game server list.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Which ports does a Wurm Unlimited server need?

TCP 3724 for game connections, UDP 27016 and up for the Steam server list, and 8766 for Steam. Without the query ports the server only shows on the LAN tab. Keep the RMI ports 7220 and 7221 closed to the public.

How many players can join?

You set the limit with the maxplayers launch option; when it is set there, in-game commands cannot change it. Plan the memory for the players and creatures you expect.

Adventure or Creative: what is the difference?

Adventure starts on a prebuilt map with a tutorial, the Key of the Heavens quest and NPCs, with PvP on by default. Creative starts on a blank map without villages or NPCs, with random soul stones as spawn points.

Can I change skill gain and timers?

Yes. The Server Management window sets skill gain rates, action timers, PvP or PvE and creature counts. Epic settings speed up skill gain further and let missions affect Valrei.

How do I give myself admin rights?

Set an admin password with adminpwd to unlock in-game admin commands, and give trusted players a GM power level in the Players tab, from Hero up to Implementor.

Can I use mods?

Yes, through Ago’s community mod loader, which the 1.9.2.7 beta also added to the server and client. Put server mods into the mods folder; players need client mods only for mods that change the client. Mods are shared on the official forum.

Can I link several servers?

Yes. Servers can form a cluster with a login server and RMI connections, so players travel between them. Each extra server uses its own game, query and RMI ports.

Does Wurm Unlimited still get updates?

The 1.9.2.7 beta from January 2020 marked the end of official content updates. The game is still sold on Steam, and the developers still answer technical issues.

How do I keep strangers out?

Set serverpassword so only players with the password can join, and ban players by Steam ID. Maintenance mode lets in only staff with a power level above 0.

Does the server run on Linux?

Yes. Start WurmServerLauncher with start= and your world folder. The launcher is a graphical program, so a headless Linux server needs a virtual display such as Xvfb.
