How big should a CryoFall server be?

CryoFall publishes its own server sizing. The server uses at most two cores, so fast cores and bandwidth matter more than core count.

Figures from AtomicTorch’s server hardware recommendations. Disk is our starting point for the server, saves and backups.

Rules, rates and moderation

Everything about a CryoFall server lives in two files and the in-game console.

SettingsServer.xml

Server name, description, welcome message, port, public listing and the list of operators.

ServerRates.config

Gathering, crafting and learning rates and the PvP switch. Remove the # in front of a line to change it.

Operators and moderation

Operators open the console with the ~ key and manage the whitelist, blacklist, kick list and mute list with / commands.

Base protection on PvP

S.H.I.E.L.D. protection is on by default for PvP servers, so fixed raiding windows are no longer recommended.

Open code and mods

The game code is open and moddable with real-time editing; set no_client_mods to 1 to keep client mods off a PvP server.

Docker

AtomicTorch recommends its official Docker image for Linux servers.

Set up your CryoFall server

Four steps from the first choice to the first landing.

  1. Pick PvE or PvP and a size

Use the developer’s figures in the table above for your expected players.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to most of your players from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Set name, rates and operators

Edit SettingsServer.xml and ServerRates.config, add your nickname as an operator and choose whether the server is public.

  4. Invite your players

Players find a public server in the community list or add it with its address.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
How many players can a CryoFall server hold?

Hundreds. The game is built for many players on one map, and AtomicTorch publishes hardware figures for about 30, 100, 200 and 300 players.

What hardware does the server need?

Very little: about 1.5 GB of RAM and one core for 30 players, 2 GB and two cores for 100 to 200, and 2.5 GB with two fast cores for 300. More than two cores brings no benefit; bandwidth grows with players.

Which port does the server use?

UDP 6000 by default. You can change it in SettingsServer.xml in the Data folder.

How do I make myself an operator?

Add your nickname to server_operators_list in SettingsServer.xml. Operators open the console with the ~ key and use commands that start with /.

How do I change rates or turn on PvP?

In Data/ServerRates.config. Every line is switched off with a # at first; remove it and set your value. Operators can also change rates in the game.

How do I start a fresh world?

Start the server with new instead of load; it creates a new world. Stop the server with stop and a delay in seconds, which saves the world first.

Where are the saves and how do I back them up?

Saves are in Data/Saves. Back up the whole Data folder before an update. Moving saves between major versions is not supported.

Can I use mods?

Yes. CryoFall’s game code is open and moddable, with real-time code editing and a map editor. On PvP servers you can set no_client_mods to 1 so players cannot join with client mods.

Does the server run on Linux?

Yes. The server runs on Windows, Linux and macOS with the .NET 6 runtime, and AtomicTorch recommends its official Docker image on Linux.
