A client account can be used by more than one person without sharing a password. Users sign in with their own login and the permissions you give them. Contacts do not sign in; they receive the emails you choose, such as invoices for your accounting team. This guide sets up both.
Before you start
- You need to be the account owner, or a user with permission to manage users and contacts.
- Decide who needs to do something in the client area (a user) and who only needs to be informed (a contact).
Invite a user
- Open the account menu (your name at the top right) and choose User Management.
- Select Invite New User and enter the person's email address.
- Choose All Permissions, or Choose Permissions and tick only what they need, for example viewing and paying invoices, opening support tickets, managing domains or viewing services.
- Select Send Invite.
The person receives an email invitation. If they already have a login, they accept it with that login; otherwise they create one. Invitations you sent are listed under Pending Invites, where you can resend or cancel them.
Verify: once accepted, the user appears in the list with their email address and last login.
Change or remove a user's access
In User Management:
- Manage Permissions changes what a user can do.
- Remove Access removes the user from your account. Their login still exists for other accounts they belong to, but they can no longer reach yours.
When someone leaves, remove their access, then change server passwords, SSH keys and any API keys they knew.
Work with several accounts
If you are a user on more than one client account, for example your own and a customer's, sign in once and use Switch Account in the account menu to change between them. Check the account name at the top before you order, pay or cancel something.
Add a contact
- Open the account menu and choose Contacts.
- Select Add New Contact and enter the name, email and address.
- Under Email Preferences, tick the emails this contact should receive:
- General Emails (announcements and password reminders)
- Invoice Emails (invoices and billing reminders)
- Support Emails (copies of ticket messages)
- Product Emails (order details and welcome emails)
- Domain Emails (renewal notices and registration confirmations)
- Save the contact.
Contacts can also be used as domain contacts (registrant, administrative, technical, billing) when you register or update a domain.
Verify: the next invoice or notice of the selected type is sent to the contact as well.
Good practice
- One login per person and two-factor authentication for every user; see two-factor authentication.
- Review User Management regularly and remove people who no longer need access.
- Keep a contact for billing even if the owner changes roles, so invoices never go unread.
Troubleshooting
The invitation email does not arrive. Ask the person to check their spam folder, then use Resend Invite. Make sure the email address is spelled correctly.
"The email address entered is already a user of this account". The person already has access. Use Manage Permissions to change what they can do.
A user cannot see a menu item. They lack the permission for it. Add it with Manage Permissions.
Next steps
- Protect every login: two-factor authentication.
- Billing for teams: invoices and payment methods.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a user and a contact?
A user can sign in to the client area with their own email and password and do what their permissions allow. A contact cannot sign in; it only receives the emails you select, such as invoices or domain notices.
Can one person access several client accounts?
Yes. A user who is invited to more than one account signs in once and switches between the accounts with Switch Account.
Does an invited user see my password or payment details?
No. Each user has their own login. What they can see and do depends on the permissions you choose, for example viewing and paying invoices or opening tickets.
How do I remove someone who left the company?
Open User Management and choose Remove Access for that user. Also change any server passwords or keys they knew, and remove them as a contact if they were one.
Who is the account owner?
The person who created the account. The owner always has full permissions and receives important account emails. To change the owner, open a support ticket.
