How big a server does web analytics need?

Monthly pageviews decide the size. Matomo publishes official sizing; Plausible and Umami are lighter at the same traffic.

Matomo’s official sizing for its On-Premise edition, on SSD storage. Plausible CE needs at least 2 GB of RAM because of ClickHouse; Umami is lighter. All three keep raw data that grows with traffic.

Analytics without handing over your visitors’ data

The numbers you need for marketing and product decisions, collected by a server you control.

Matomo: the full suite

Goals, ecommerce, segments, a Tag Manager and reports close to what Google Analytics users know, with premium plugins if you need more.

Plausible and Umami: light dashboards

One clear page of visitors, sources, pages and events, with small tracking scripts and no cookies.

Your data, your rules

Decide how long raw data is kept, anonymise IP addresses and keep everything in the location you choose.

Archiving done right

Matomo builds its reports with an hourly cron job instead of on each page load, which keeps the dashboard fast.

Root access, your rules

Every Linux VPS, VDS and dedicated server comes with full root access: you choose the versions, the add-ons and the security settings.

Backups included

Free weekly and monthly backups come with every VPS and VDS plan. For data that changes every day, keep copies of your own as well.

Locations on three continents

Run your server in the United States, Europe or Asia, close to the people who use it. The order form estimates the latency from where you are to each location.

Room to grow

Start on a VPS and move to a bigger plan, a VDS with NVMe storage or a dedicated server when your data and users grow.

Start measuring in four steps

Order the app preinstalled on your server, or install it yourself with our guide.

  1. Choose your server

Pick a VPS, VDS or dedicated server in the size from the table above and the location closest to your users.

  2. Install your analytics tool

Choose it as an app option, or follow our guide: Matomo with PHP and MariaDB, Plausible CE or Umami with Docker Compose.

  3. Add your domain and TLS

Point a subdomain such as app.example.com at the server’s IP address and serve the app over HTTPS with a free Let’s Encrypt certificate.

  4. Add the tracking code

Create your site in the dashboard, add the tracking snippet to your pages and, for Matomo, set up the hourly archiving cron job.

Step-by-step setup guides

Install, secure and update the app with our guides, written for current Ubuntu and Debian releases.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Matomo, Plausible or Umami: which should I choose?

Matomo when you need a full suite with goals, ecommerce reports, segments and a tag manager. Plausible Community Edition for a simple, single-page dashboard backed by ClickHouse. Umami for a light Node.js app with events, and in version 3 heatmaps and session replay.

Do I still need a cookie banner?

Plausible and Umami do not set cookies, and Matomo can be configured to work without them. Whether you need a consent banner depends on the law that applies to you and on what you track, so check with your legal adviser.

Why does Matomo need a cron job?

Matomo turns raw visits into reports in a step called archiving. Above a few hundred visits a day, run console core:archive every hour from cron and turn off archiving in the browser; the dashboard then loads quickly and reports stay complete.

What does Plausible Community Edition need?

Docker Compose, a domain pointed at the server, at least 2 GB of RAM and a CPU with SSE 4.2 or NEON for ClickHouse. The Community Edition is released twice a year and is supported by its community.

What changed in Umami 3?

Umami 3 supports PostgreSQL only; MySQL installs must migrate with the official guide. It needs Node.js 22 or newer and adds features such as heatmaps, session replay and two-factor login. Change the default admin password right after the first login.

Can I bring my Google Analytics history?

Matomo offers a Google Analytics importer plugin that brings past reports into Matomo. For the other tools, keep your old reports exported and start fresh; the numbers are counted differently anyway.
