Starting points built on the wiki’s minimum of 8 GB, which applies even to an empty Windows server. Large bases and many zombies need more.
Access, admin and automation
VEIN’s server tools grow with every Early Access update.
Whitelist and password
Since 0.023 a whitelist lets only listed players in; a password protects the server as well.
Admin menu
Admins listed by SteamID64 open an in-game menu with the ban list, item spawning, permission zones and an admin action log.
Permission zones
Mark areas where players cannot be hurt by anything but other players, or keep a safe base area for your group.
HTTP API
Read status, players, weather and time, send notifications or force a save from outside the game. Keep the API closed to the internet.
Console variables
Tune gameplay with vein.* variables such as zombie health or XP multiplier, in Engine.ini or from the admin menu.
Discord chat
Send the in-game chat to a Discord channel with a webhook in the server settings.

Frequently asked questions
Does VEIN have a dedicated server?
Yes. VEIN Dedicated Server is Steam app 2131400; it installs with SteamCMD and an anonymous login and runs on Windows with VeinServer.exe or on Linux with VeinServer.sh.
Which ports does the server use?
The wiki lists UDP 7777 for the game and UDP 7778 for queries. If you turn on the HTTP API, it uses its own port; keep that one closed to the internet.
How much memory does the server need?
The wiki lists at least 8 GB of RAM, measured with no players on Windows Server 2019, and at least 5 GB of disk space. Plan more for players, zombies and large bases.
How many players can join?
Set -MaxPlayers= at launch or MaxPlayers in Game.ini. The wiki’s example uses 64; Ramjet has not published a hard limit.
How do I add admins?
List their SteamID64s as admins in Game.ini. Admins open the in-game admin menu with its ban list, item spawning, permission zones and an admin action log.
Can I limit who joins?
Yes. Since version 0.023 in March 2026 the server has a whitelist, and a password works as well. Banned players are kept in the admin menu’s ban list.
Where are server saves kept?
Dedicated servers keep the save folder they always used; set a different one with -SaveDir= or SaveDir in the settings. Saves are forward-compatible, so older saves load in newer versions.
Can I change zombies and progression?
Yes, with vein.* console variables such as vein.Zombies.Health or vein.Stats.XPMultiplier, set under ConsoleVariables in Engine.ini or from the admin menu.
What does the HTTP API do?
Since version 0.021 it reports status, players, weather and time, and since 0.023 it can send notifications and force a save, which is useful before a backup.
Can I use mods?
Not yet. Ramjet has said that modding will start with Lua scripting, and that this work is at a very early stage.
Can I stay on an older version?
Yes. Ramjet keeps a branch for each version of the server on Steam, so a group can stay on one version until everyone has updated. Players need the same version as the server.
