Squad plans are being prepared
Tell us your slot count, mods and how you seed the server, and our team will reply with the options. Or open a ticket and we will let you know when the plans are online.
How big should a Squad server be?
A full 100-player match is heavy on the CPU. Keep the server ticking smoothly rather than adding slots.

Layers, admins and mods
Everything a Squad server does is set in the files of SquadGame/ServerConfig.
Layer rotation
LayerRotation.cfg or LevelRotation.cfg decide the next match, in order or at random, with exclusion lists and map voting.
Admin groups
Admins.cfg defines groups with rights such as kick, ban, changemap or reserve, then assigns Steam IDs to them.
RCON
Rcon.cfg sets the TCP port and password for remote tools; RCON stays off without a password.
Workshop mods
Download mods from the Squad Workshop to the server. Since 10.6, players without the matching mod files cannot join a modded server.
Reserved slots and queue
NumReservedSlots keeps places for members with the reserve right, and PublicQueueLimit caps the waiting queue.
Licensed or custom
Offworld’s licensing program lists approved servers in the main browser; every other server appears in the Custom Servers tab.
Set up your Squad server
Four steps from the config files to a full server.
-
Pick the size
Plan for a full 100-player match with the table above, plus headroom for mods.
-
Pick a location
Choose the one closest to your community from our 20 game server locations.
-
Edit the server config
Set the name and slots in Server.cfg, your admins in Admins.cfg, the RCON password and the layer rotation.
-
Seed and play
Players find the server in the browser; a seed layer helps fill it before the first full match.

Frequently asked questions
How many players can a Squad server hold?
Squad is built for 100 players, 50 on each side. The default Server.cfg sets MaxPlayers to 100, with options for reserved slots and a public queue of up to 25 players.
Which ports does a Squad server use?
By default the game port is 7787 and the query port 27165; RCON listens on TCP 21114 when you set a password in Rcon.cfg. A second server on the same machine needs its own set of ports.
Where are the server settings?
In SquadGame/ServerConfig: Server.cfg for the name, slots and rules, Admins.cfg and Bans.cfg for people, Rcon.cfg for remote access, LayerRotation.cfg for the matches, plus MOTD.cfg and ServerMessages.cfg for messages.
How do I add admins?
In Admins.cfg, define a group with its rights, for example Group=Admin:kick, ban, changemap, then add each person as Admin=Steam64ID:Admin.
What is a licensed Squad server?
Offworld runs a licensing program for community servers. Licensed servers are listed in the main server browser and follow Offworld’s rules, for example at least 10 admins and no password. Servers outside the program are listed in the Custom Servers tab.
Can I run Workshop mods?
Yes. Download the mods from the Squad Steam Workshop to the server and load their layers. Since update 10.6, players who do not have the matching mod files cannot join a modded server.
Which game modes can I put in the rotation?
Advance and Secure (AAS), Random AAS (RAAS), Invasion, Insurgency, Destruction, Territory Control, Skirmish and Seed layers, plus mod layers you install.
Does Squad run on Linux?
Yes. The Squad dedicated server (Steam app 403240) ships a Windows and a Linux build.
How do I keep the server running well?
Watch the tick rate: Offworld treats 35 ticks per second as the healthy minimum. Restart the server regularly and keep mods and layers to what your players use.
Do I need to update after a Squad patch?
Yes. Players can only join a server that runs the same version, so update it after each release, such as 10.6 and its hotfix in October 2026.
