How big should a RimWorld Together server be?

Each colony runs on its player’s own PC; the server keeps the shared planet, settlements and trades. Player count and saved data decide its size.

RimWorld Together publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow from a server that stores the shared world while colonies run on players’ PCs.

Shared planet, mods and admin tools

The server’s JSON files switch features on or off; the in-game admin panel handles the rest.

One planet, many colonies

Everyone settles the same planet but plays their own colony at their own pace, keeping RimWorld’s single-player feel.

Feature switches

ActionConfigs.json turns activities, sites, roads, factions, trading, spying and custom scenarios on or off, and can enforce a game speed.

Server mod list

ModConfig.json holds the mods everyone plays with; edit it through the in-game admin panel. Since October 2026, missing mods download when a player joins.

Admin panel

Give yourself admin with the op command in the server console, then open the admin menu in game with dev mode on.

Whitelist

WhitelistConfig.json lets in only listed players; find a player’s ID with the deeplist command.

Automatic backups

The server backs up at every start, and BackupConfig.json adds timed backups and removes old ones.

Set up your RimWorld Together server

Four steps to a planet your group shares.

  1. Install the mod

Every player installs the RimWorld Together mod and Harmony, from Steam, GitHub or the in-game download menu.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your group from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Create the planet

The first player to join creates the world, so join with every mod you plan to use, then make yourself admin with op.

  4. Invite your group

Players connect from the RimWorld main menu with the address and port 25555.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
What is RimWorld Together?

A community-made multiplayer mod for RimWorld. Players share one planet, each with their own colony and pace, and meet through trading, events, sites and visits.

What do players need?

RimWorld with Harmony and the RimWorld Together mod. The mod is available on Steam, on GitHub and from the in-game download menu; keep everyone on the same mod version as the server.

Which port does the server use?

25555 by default. Port, server name, description and MaxPlayers are set in ServerConfig.json.

How do I become an admin?

Join the server once, then type op followed by your username in the server console. In game, turn on dev mode and open the admin menu.

How does the mod list work?

The server keeps its mod list in ModConfig.json; the project recommends editing it through the in-game admin panel. Since release 26.10.4.1, players get missing mods downloaded automatically when they join.

Can I limit who joins?

Yes. Add players to WhitelistConfig.json by their ID; the deeplist command in the console shows the IDs of players who have joined.

Which features can I switch off?

ActionConfigs.json toggles activities, sites, roads, factions, trading, spying and custom scenarios, and EnforcedGameSpeed can fix the game speed. Event costs and road costs have their own files.

Can I enforce a storyteller and difficulty?

Yes. StoryTellerConfig.json, DifficultyConfig.json and ScenarioConfig.json set them for every player; edit them through the admin panel.

Does the server make backups?

Yes. A backup is made at every start, and BackupConfig.json adds automatic backups at an interval in hours and deletes old ones beyond the amount you keep.

Will my server show in the server browser?

If you want it to: set EnableServerBrowser and your public address in ServerBrowserConfig.json, and make sure the server is reachable from the internet.
