Medieval Engineers plans are being prepared

Tell us your player count, your mods and whether you play the Community Edition, and our team will reply with the options. Or open a ticket and we will let you know when the plans are online.

How much RAM does a Medieval Engineers server need?

Physics drives the load: every block, mechanism and siege engine your players build has to be simulated. Large castles and many mods need more.

Keen publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow common practice. Physics-heavy builds and many Workshop mods can double the need.

Workshop, worlds and access

Everything is set in one config file, from the world you load to the mods and admins.

Steam Workshop

Enter Workshop mod IDs, one per line; the server loads them and players get them when they join.

Your own world

Copy a save from %AppData%\MedievalEngineers on your PC to the server and point LoadWorld at it.

Admins and Steam group

List admins by 64-bit Steam ID, one per line; a Steam group ID limits the server to that group.

Community Edition

Keen ended development in March 2020; volunteers continue the game as the Community Edition, a beta branch the server can run too.

Remote API

A key-protected Remote API on port 8080 lets tools manage the server remotely.

Start options

console, noconsole, path, ignorelastsession, maxPlayers, ip and port control how the server starts.

Set up your Medieval Engineers server

Four steps from an empty field to your first castle.

  1. Choose a branch and size

Pick the public or Community Edition branch to match your players, then a size from the table above.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Load world and mods

Upload your save or start a new world, add Workshop mod IDs and your admins’ Steam IDs.

  4. Invite your players

Players join from the server list or by address and port.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Which port does the server use?

UDP 27016 for the game by default; you can change it. The Remote API uses port 8080 by default. Every instance on the same address needs its own ports.

How do I set the player limit?

Set it in the server’s config or with the maxPlayers start option, which overrides the config value. Physics-heavy worlds need more CPU as player numbers grow.

Can I bring my existing world?

Yes. Your saves are in %AppData%\MedievalEngineers on your PC. Copy the save folder to the server and set LoadWorld in MedievalEngineers-Dedicated.cfg to its full path.

How do I add Workshop mods?

Enter the Workshop mod IDs in the server config, one per line, and restart. Players download the mods when they join.

How do I add admins?

List their 64-bit Steam IDs, not their names, one per line under the server admins. Admins can kick and ban players.

Can I keep the server for my Steam group?

Yes. Enter your Steam group ID and only its members see the server. You find the ID as groupID64 on the group’s members list XML page.

What is the Community Edition?

Keen Software House ended development of Medieval Engineers in March 2020. Volunteers, with Keen’s support, continue it as the Community Edition, a beta branch on Steam; version 0.7.4 came out in December 2024. Run the server on the same branch as your players.

Does the server run on Linux?

The official server is a Windows program and needs .NET Framework 4.6.1 or newer.

How do I stop the server without losing progress?

Stop it normally so it saves first. Forcing it to close skips the save; ignorelastsession at start ignores the last automatic save if you need an older one.
