SA-MP server hosting on open.mp

Run your San Andreas roleplay, freeroam or deathmatch server on open.mp, the maintained successor of the SA-MP server. It loads Pawn gamemodes, filterscripts and plugins, and players with the SA-MP 0.3.7 client or the open.mp launcher can join.

SA-MP plans are being prepared

How big should an SA-MP server be?

The server program itself is small. Your gamemode, its plugins and the number of objects and vehicles decide the load.

open.mp publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow common practice. A roleplay gamemode with a database and thousands of objects needs far more than freeroam.

Gamemodes, filterscripts and plugins

An SA-MP server is the Pawn scripts it runs. open.mp loads the same kinds of scripts on a newer, maintained server.

Pawn gamemodes

The main script in the gamemodes folder sets the rules: roleplay, freeroam, deathmatch, racing or your own idea. Name it in pawn.main_scripts.

Filterscripts

Side scripts for admin systems, maps and extra features, loaded from the filterscripts folder through pawn.side_scripts.

Plugins and components

Plugins such as MySQL or streamer go in the plugins folder; Pawn.CMD, Pawn.RakNet and sscanf belong in the components folder.

Moving from SA-MP

Replace #include <a_samp> with #include <open.mp>, recompile with the bundled compiler and convert server.cfg with --dump-config.

0.3.7 and open.mp players

Players with the SA-MP 0.3.7 client can join while allow_037_clients is on, which is the default; others use the open.mp launcher.

RCON

Turn on rcon.enable and set your own password: the server refuses to start while the RCON password is still changeme.

Set up your SA-MP server

Four steps from your gamemode to the first players in San Andreas.

  1. Choose your gamemode

Bring your Pawn gamemode or start from a freeroam or deathmatch script, then pick a size from the table above.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Fill in config.json

Set the name, max_players, password and RCON, and list your main script, filterscripts and plugins.

  4. Invite your players

Players add the address and port 7777 in the open.mp launcher or the SA-MP 0.3.7 client.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
What is open.mp and why not the old SA-MP server?

open.mp is the community-built successor of the SA-MP server. The old sa-mp.com site shut down in September 2023, while open.mp keeps releasing updates; version 1.5.8 came out in December 2025. It accepts players on the SA-MP 0.3.7 client.

How many players can join an SA-MP server?

open.mp starts with 50 slots and accepts from 1 to 1000. Set max_players in config.json. Your gamemode and plugins decide how many players the server handles well.

Which port does the server use?

7777 over UDP by default, set with network.port in config.json. Remote console and server queries use the same port.

Can I bring my SA-MP gamemode?

Yes. Put the gamemode in the gamemodes folder, replace #include with #include and compile it with the bundled compiler. Move Pawn.CMD, Pawn.RakNet and sscanf to the components folder; YSF is no longer needed and the official NPC component replaces FCNPC.

What do players need to join?

The PC version 1.0 of GTA San Andreas, not the Definitive Edition, plus the open.mp launcher or the SA-MP 0.3.7 client. They add the server with its address and port.

How do I use the remote console?

Set rcon.enable to true and choose a password other than changeme. In the game, log in with /rcon login and the password, then use commands such as kick, ban, gmx, changemode and loadfs.

Can I keep my old server.cfg?

open.mp still reads server.cfg, but config.json is the recommended format. Run omp-server --dump-config in the server folder to convert it, after removing any existing config.json.

Will my server appear in the server list?

Yes, when announce is true, which is the default: the server registers with the open.mp masterlist that the open.mp launcher shows. Set a language so players can filter for it.

How do I lock the server with a password?

Set password in config.json. Only players who know it can join; leave it empty for a public server.
