Garry’s Mod plans are being prepared
Tell us your game mode, slot count and addons, and our team will reply with the options. Or open a ticket and we will let you know when the plans are online.
How big should a Garry’s Mod server be?
Facepunch publishes no server hardware figures. Game mode, addons and slots decide the load, and single-core speed matters most.

Facepunch publishes no server hardware figures; these sizes follow common practice. Mounted content and large Workshop collections need extra disk space.
Game modes, Workshop and content
A Garry’s Mod server is what you load on it.
Game modes
Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town ship with the game; DarkRP, Prop Hunt and many more come from the community. Pick one with +gamemode.
Workshop collections
Start with +host_workshop_collection and a public or unlisted collection; players download its maps and the game mode when they join.
More content for players
Mark addons with models or sounds with resource.AddWorkshop in server-side Lua, or serve files over FastDL with sv_downloadurl.
Lua addons
Put addons and scripts on the server; Lua files reach players through the game’s own system.
Mounted content
Download Counter-Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2 content with SteamCMD and mount it in mount.cfg to fix missing textures and ERROR models.
Your own login token
Each server needs its own Game Server Login Token for App ID 4000; without one it ranks far lower in the list.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Game Server Login Token for Garry’s Mod?
Yes. Create a token for App ID 4000 on Steam’s game server account page and start the server with +sv_setsteamaccount. Since May 2020 servers without a token rank far lower in the server list. Use one token per server.
How many players can join?
You set the slots with +maxplayers on the command line, and the game offers up to 128. The value cannot be changed from Lua while the server runs.
Which game modes can I run?
Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town ship with the game. DarkRP, Prop Hunt and hundreds of others come from the community, mostly through the Steam Workshop.
How do I add Workshop content?
Start the server with +host_workshop_collection and the ID of a public or unlisted collection. Players download the current map and game mode automatically; mark other content with resource.AddWorkshop in server-side Lua.
Why do players see ERROR models or missing textures?
Many addons use Counter-Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2 content. Download it with SteamCMD and mount it in garrysmod/cfg/mount.cfg; on Linux, paths are case-sensitive.
What is FastDL?
A web server that hands custom files to players, set with sv_downloadurl and resource.AddFile; bzip2-compressed files are tried first. The built-in download is slow, so FastDL is the better choice for custom content.
Which port does the server use?
27015 by default (hostport). When players connect without a port, 27015 is used.
How do players join?
Through the in-game server browser or their favorites, or by typing connect with the address and port in the console.
Is there a 64-bit server?
Yes. Since the September 2026 update, 64-bit binaries for the dedicated server are available on every branch.
What rules apply to server operators?
Facepunch’s server operator rules forbid fake player counts or server details and a wrong sv_location; breaking them can get a server blacklisted.
