How big should a Black Mesa server be?
A Source deathmatch server is light on memory. Slots and tick decide the CPU load; the large download decides the disk.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Black Mesa dedicated server?
Yes. Black Mesa Dedicated Server is a free tool on Steam (app 346680) with Windows and Linux builds. It starts as a Source Dedicated Server with -game bms.
Which ports does a Black Mesa server use?
Like every Source server: 27015 over TCP and UDP for the game and RCON, changed with -port; 27020 UDP for SourceTV and 27005 UDP as the client port.
Which maps can I play?
Black Mesa ships ten multiplayer maps from the Half-Life universe, including Bounce, Gasworks, Stalkyard, Undertow and Crossfire. Steam Workshop adds community maps.
How many players can join?
You set the slots with +maxplayers when the server starts. Valve’s guide notes that 1 GB of memory is enough for over 60 slots in total on a Source server; deathmatch maps play best with smaller groups.
Where do I put my server settings?
In bms/cfg/server.cfg: the hostname shown in the server browser, passwords and game rules. Start the server with +map and +maxplayers on the command line.
Why does Steam reject my server with error 18 or 106?
Valve’s guide says the Game Server Login Token passed with sv_setsteamaccount is invalid. Regenerate it, or create a new one, and replace it in the start parameters.
Why is the download so large?
The dedicated server includes Black Mesa’s game content: the public build is about 31 GB on Windows and Linux. Plan the disk with room for Workshop maps and updates.
How do players connect?
Through the server browser in Black Mesa, or by opening the console and typing connect followed by the address and port. Servers answer queries only once a map is loaded.
