Astroneer plans are being prepared
Tell us your crew size and whether you bring a save, and our team will reply with the options. Or open a ticket and we will let you know when the plans are online.
How much RAM does an Astroneer server need?
A server holds up to eight players, so the size of your bases, vehicles and automation decides the load.

System Era publishes no server hardware figures. These starting points are derived from the 3 GB install and the eight-player limit; big automated bases need more.
Owner, saves and platforms
How an Astroneer dedicated server is set up, and who can join it.
Owner account
Write your Steam name in OwnerName. The first player who joins with that name becomes the owner, and the server stores their ID in OwnerGuid.
Your own save
Copy a save named NAME$date.savegame into the SaveGames folder and point ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName at the part before the $.
Public IP and port
Set PublicIP in AstroServerSettings.ini and the port in Engine.ini; players connect to that address.
Eight explorers
Normal co-op stops at four players. A dedicated server takes up to eight.
Who can join
Self-hosted servers are for Steam players. Xbox and Microsoft Store players can only use servers from Microsoft-preferred providers.
Edit while stopped
Change the .ini files only while the server is offline; edits made while it runs are not saved.

Frequently asked questions
How many players can join an Astroneer server?
Up to eight. Normal Astroneer co-op is for 2 to 4 players; a dedicated server raises that to eight.
Which platforms can join a self-hosted Astroneer server?
Steam players. System Era’s guide says Xbox and Microsoft Store players can only join servers from Microsoft-preferred providers, not servers that others run themselves, and it also lists PlayStation 4 as able to join any dedicated server. Switch has no dedicated server option.
Which port does the server use?
The port set in Engine.ini under [URL], 8777 in System Era’s example. Open it in the firewall as well.
How do I become the owner of the server?
Put your Steam name in OwnerName and leave OwnerGuid at 0 in AstroServerSettings.ini. The first player who connects with that name becomes the owner, and their ID is written to the file. To hand over ownership, replace the name.
Can I bring my existing save?
Yes. Copy the .savegame file into the server’s Astro\Saved\SaveGames folder. Its name follows NAME$date.savegame; set ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName in AstroServerSettings.ini to the part before the $.
Why are my settings changes lost?
The .ini files must be edited while the server is offline. Changes made while it runs are not saved.
What is PublicIP for?
PublicIP in AstroServerSettings.ini is the public address of the server, the one players use to connect.
Can I use mods on the server?
System Era warns that modifying the game, or connecting to its backend services to bypass unlocks, leads to an immediate ban. Run the server as the game ships it.
Does the server run on Linux?
System Era’s guide covers the Windows server, ASTRONEER Dedicated Server in the Steam tools (app 728470). Linux is not covered by the official guide.
