How big a server does Odoo need?

Odoo is sized by concurrent users and workers. PostgreSQL runs next to it and needs memory of its own.

From Odoo’s deployment guide: one worker serves about six concurrent users, light workers use about 150 MB and heavy ones about 1 GB, and its example of nine workers needs about 3 GB of RAM. PostgreSQL needs memory on top.

One system for the whole company

Odoo’s apps share one database, so a sale becomes a delivery and an invoice without copying data between tools.

Apps that work together

Start with CRM and invoicing and add inventory, purchase, projects or a website when you need them.

A production-ready setup

Multi-worker mode, a separate websocket port behind NGINX and limits per worker, as Odoo’s deployment guide describes.

APIs and modules

Connect other systems through Odoo’s external API, and add community modules or your own to the addons path.

Your data on your server

Customer records, conversations and reports stay on a server you control, in the location you choose.

Email that arrives

Connect the app to an SMTP or transactional email service and add SPF, DKIM and DMARC to your domain, so invitations and notifications reach the inbox.

Root access, your rules

Every Linux VPS, VDS and dedicated server comes with full root access: you choose the versions, the add-ons and the security settings.

Backups included

Free weekly and monthly backups come with every VPS and VDS plan. For data that changes every day, keep copies of your own as well.

Room to grow

Start on a VPS and move to a bigger plan, a VDS with NVMe storage or a dedicated server when your data and users grow.

Launch Odoo in four steps

Order the app preinstalled on your server, or install it yourself with our guide.

  1. Choose your server

Pick the size from the table above with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the system Odoo’s packages are built for, in the location closest to your team.

  2. Install Odoo

Choose Odoo as an app option, or install PostgreSQL 16 and the official Odoo 20 package or Docker image with our guide.

  3. Add NGINX and TLS

Point your domain at the server, put NGINX with a Let’s Encrypt certificate in front of ports 8069 and 8072, and turn on proxy mode.

  4. Create your database

Create the company database with a strong master password, install the apps you need and invite your team.

Step-by-step setup guides

Install, secure and update the app with our guides, written for current Ubuntu and Debian releases.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Odoo Community or Enterprise: what is the difference?

Community is the open-source edition with the core apps such as CRM, sales, invoicing, inventory and website. Enterprise adds more apps and features. Both run on your own server; tell us which edition you use and we will size the server for it.

What does Odoo 20 need on the server?

Python 3.12 or newer and PostgreSQL 16 or newer; the AI features also need pgvector. Odoo publishes packages for Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 42 and an official Docker image, and a reverse proxy such as NGINX in front of it.

How many workers do I need?

Odoo’s guide counts one worker for about six concurrent users, with at most (CPU cores × 2) + 1 workers, plus a cron worker. Ten people working at once fit in two or three workers; set memory limits per worker so one heavy report cannot exhaust the server.

Why does Odoo need port 8072?

In multi-worker mode, Odoo serves live updates such as chat and notifications over websockets on a separate gevent port, 8072 by default. Your NGINX configuration sends the /websocket path there and everything else to 8069.

How do I upgrade to a new major version?

Each major version changes the database, so an upgrade is a migration, not a package update. Enterprise users use Odoo’s upgrade service; Community users can use the OCA’s OpenUpgrade project. Always test on a copy of the database first.

How do I back up Odoo?

Back up both the PostgreSQL database and the filestore folder, which holds attachments. Schedule pg_dump and a copy of the filestore every night, keep copies off the server, and protect the database manager with a strong master password or turn it off.

Is port 25 open on my VPS?

Outbound port 25 is closed by default on HyperDC VPS. For services ordered for a term of 3 months or longer, we open it on request: open a support ticket. Until then, send through an SMTP relay on port 587. A relay or email service also helps your mail reach the inbox.
