Tell us how busy your site is and which extensions you use, and our team will reply with the right server. Or start today on a Linux VPS and install Joomla with our guide.
How big a server does Joomla need?
Small Joomla sites run well on web hosting. Busy portals and community sites with many extensions are happier on a VPS.

Everything Joomla needs, under your control
Joomla brings many features in core that other systems add with plugins, so a well-sized server goes a long way.
Multilingual in core
Run one site in many languages with content associations and a language switcher, without extra extensions.
Users, groups and access levels
Fine-grained access control decides who can see, write, edit and publish, which suits portals and member sites.
Automated core updates
Since Joomla 5.4 and 6.0, sites can opt in to automated core updates, so security releases arrive without waiting for you.
Web services API
Read and write content through Joomla’s REST API, and manage the site from the command line with the CLI.
Root access, your rules
Every Linux VPS, VDS and dedicated server comes with full root access: you choose the versions, the add-ons and the security settings.
Backups included
Free weekly and monthly backups come with every VPS and VDS plan. For data that changes every day, keep copies of your own as well.
Locations on three continents
Run your server in the United States, Europe or Asia, close to the people who use it. The order form estimates the latency from where you are to each location.
Preinstalled or with our guide
Choose the app as an option when you order and it is installed for you, or set it up yourself with our step-by-step guide.
Launch Joomla in four steps

Point a subdomain such as app.example.com at the server’s IP address and serve the app over HTTPS with a free Let’s Encrypt certificate.
-
Run the web installer
Open your domain, enter the site name, the administrator account and the database details, then turn on search-engine-friendly URLs.
Step-by-step setup guides
Install, secure and update the app with our guides, written for current Ubuntu and Debian releases.

Frequently asked questions
Joomla 5 or Joomla 6: which should I use?
Joomla 6 for new sites: it is the current line, with bug fixes until October 2028 and security fixes until October 2029. Joomla 5 gets bug fixes until 13 October 2026 and security fixes until 12 October 2027, so plan the upgrade now.
How do I upgrade from Joomla 5 to Joomla 6?
Update to Joomla 5.4 first, check that your extensions and template have Joomla 6 versions, and use the compatibility plugin while you test. Take a backup and run the upgrade on a staging copy before the live site.
What does Joomla 6 need on the server?
PHP 8.3 or newer, with 8.4 recommended; MySQL 8.0.13, MariaDB 10.4 or PostgreSQL 12 or newer; and Apache 2.4, Nginx 1.26 or IIS 10. Plan a PHP memory_limit of at least 256 MB.
Can Joomla run on web hosting?
Yes. Small and medium Joomla sites run well on our Linux web hosting with cPanel. Choose a VPS for busy portals, PostgreSQL, your own caching or full control over PHP.
Why do my search-engine-friendly URLs show a 404 error?
URL rewriting is not set up. On Apache, rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess and enable mod_rewrite; on Nginx, add the try_files rule from Joomla’s documentation. Then turn on URL rewriting in the global configuration.
Can you move my Joomla site to HyperDC?
Migration is free on our Linux VPS plans. We copy the files and the database and update the configuration, and you switch DNS once the site works on the new server.
