# Upload files on Windows hosting: File Manager and Disk Access

> Put your site's files on HyperDC Windows hosting: work in File Manager in the browser, or open your hosting as a drive on your computer with Disk Access.

Difficulty: Beginner

Your website's files must sit in the right folder of your hosting account. You can work on them in the browser with **File Manager**, or open your hosting as a drive on your computer with **Disk Access**, over an encrypted HTTPS connection.

## Where your files go

| Site | Folder |
|---|---|
| Main domain | `httpdocs` |
| Add-on domain or subdomain | The **Document root** shown in the **Websites** tab |

## Use File Manager

Open **File Manager** on your service page. It opens in `httpdocs`.

- **Open a folder:** select its name. **Up one level** and the path above the list take you back.
- **Upload:** select **Upload**, or drag files onto the panel. Large files go up in pieces, and a bar shows the progress.
- **New folder:** select **New Folder**.
- **Edit a text file:** select its name, change it and select **Save File**.
- **Unpack a `.zip`:** open its menu and select **Extract**.
- **Download:** select the download icon in the file's row.
- **Delete:** open its menu and select **Delete**. Deleted files are removed for good.

The bar under the list shows how much of your **Disk space** you have used.

**Verify:** the files appear in the list with the size you expect.

## Connect with Disk Access

1. Open **Disk Access** on your service page. The main account is in the list, with a user name such as `hdc123_disk`. Your address is `https://webdisk.example.com/`, with your own domain in place of `example.com`.
2. To give the account a password of its own, select **Change Password** in its row. Until then it uses your hosting password.
3. Connect from your computer with the address, the user name and the password:
   - **Windows:** in File Explorer, right-click **This PC**, choose **Add a network location** and enter the address.
   - **macOS:** in Finder, choose **Go › Connect to Server**, enter the address and select **Connect**.
   - **Linux:** in your file manager, open **Other Locations** and connect to `davs://webdisk.example.com/`.

The **Guides** button in the same tab has the steps for each system and for other programs. The address works once your domain points to the server; see [first steps on Windows hosting](/guides/windows-hosting-first-steps).

**Verify:** your computer shows the folders of your hosting account, and a test file you copy there appears in **File Manager**.

## Add an account for someone else

Select **New Account** and fill in the form. An account you limit to one folder has its own address, shown in its row, and opens only that folder. Use it for a designer or a developer who works on one site.

## Troubleshooting

**The Disk Access address does not open.** Your domain must point to the server first. Check its A record; see [point a domain to your server](/guides/point-domain-to-server).

**Windows stops copying a large file.** The drive client built into Windows has a limit of about 50 MB per file. Upload larger files with File Manager.

**An upload stops.** Check **Disk space** under the file list, then upload the file again.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do my files go?

Your main domain's files go into httpdocs. For an add-on domain or a subdomain, the Websites tab shows the document root.

### Can I upload web.config and other hidden files?

Yes. File Manager uploads, edits and downloads files such as web.config and .env. Web Shield stops visitors from reading them over the web.

### Which should I use, File Manager or Disk Access?

File Manager needs nothing but your browser, and your client area login protects it. Disk Access suits you if you want to copy and open files as if they were on your own computer.

### Can I use FTP or SFTP?

No. FTP is not safe enough for passwords and files, so Windows hosting offers File Manager and Disk Access, which works over HTTPS only.

### What is the Disk Access password?

The main account uses your hosting password until you give it its own with Change Password in its row. An extra account has the password you set for it.
