# Internet radio: live DJs, automatic fallback and recordings

> Broadcast live on your HyperDC radio: create DJ accounts and time slots, connect your encoder, let AutoDJ take over when you leave and keep your shows.

Difficulty: Beginner

Presenters broadcast live on your station from their own computer. Each has a DJ account, and AutoDJ steps in by itself whenever nobody is live.

## Step 1: Create a DJ account

1. Open **Live** and select **New DJ**.
2. Enter the **DJ name**, which the presenter signs in with, the **Shown name** listeners see and a **Password**.
3. Choose the **Role**: a DJ broadcasts; an **Admin** also runs the station.
4. Under **Time slots (none = any time)**, select **Add Time Slot** for each show the DJ may broadcast in, or leave it empty.
5. Make sure **Enabled** is on and save.

## Step 2: Connect the encoder

1. Select **Go Live** in the strip at the top. **Connection details** shows the **Server**, the **Port (Icecast SOURCE/PUT)**, the **Port (SHOUTcast v1/v2 legacy)**, the **Mount** and the **User and password** to use.
2. In your encoder, enter the **Server**, the port that matches your encoder's protocol and the **Mount**, with the DJ name and password. For SHOUTcast, the password is `djname:password`.
3. Start broadcasting in your encoder.

> **Note**
>
> Your station accepts DJ software over Icecast (`SOURCE` or `PUT`, also HTTPS `PUT` on port 443) and SHOUTcast (v1, and v2 in its v1/legacy source mode with `djname:password` or `djname:password:#1`). SHOUTcast v2's native Ultravox 2.1 source mode is not supported. Listeners play `https://{station address}/listen/{stream}` in MP3, AAC or Opus with now-playing (ICY) metadata, plus `.m3u` and `.pls` links, and directories can read Icecast's `status-json.xsl` and SHOUTcast's `7.html`, `currentsong` and `stats`.

The live DJ takes the air at once: the strip shows **Live** with the DJ's name.

**Verify:** the station page plays your voice, and **On Air** lists your show.

## How the automatic fallback works

- When a DJ connects, the live show replaces AutoDJ.
- Short gaps in the DJ's connection are held, so listeners do not hear a drop.
- When the DJ disconnects, AutoDJ takes over at once, with no silence and no action from you.

## Remove a DJ from the air

In **Live**, select **Kick DJ**. Enter **Ban for (minutes, 0 = no ban)** to keep that DJ off for a while. AutoDJ takes over at once.

## Keep and share your shows

1. Open **Settings** and switch on **Record live shows**.
2. Each live show appears under **Recordings** in the **Live** tab, with **Listen**.
3. To publish them, open **Reach**, switch on **Publish live recordings as a podcast** and enter the **Podcast title** and **Description**.

## Frequently asked questions

### What happens when my connection drops during a live show?

Short gaps are held, so a brief drop is not heard. If the DJ stays away, AutoDJ takes over at once and the station keeps playing.

### Can a DJ broadcast only in their own show?

Yes. Give the DJ account time slots; without any, the DJ may go live at any time.

### Can I remove a DJ from the air?

Yes. Kick DJ in the Live tab ends the live show, and Ban for keeps that DJ off for the minutes you choose.

### Are live shows recorded?

If you switch on Record live shows in Settings, each live show is kept under Recordings.
