# Databases on Linux hosting: MariaDB and PostgreSQL

> Create MariaDB and PostgreSQL databases on HyperDC Linux hosting, copy the connection details into your application and run queries in the SQL console.

Difficulty: Intermediate

Your Linux hosting plan includes **MySQL-compatible (MariaDB)** and **PostgreSQL** databases. You create and work with them in the **Databases** tab of your service page. Databases accept connections only from the server itself: your websites reach them, and nobody on the internet can.

## Step 1: Create a database

1. Open **Databases** and select **New Database**.
2. Choose the **Engine**: **MySQL** for MariaDB, or **PostgreSQL**.
3. Enter a **Database name** using letters, digits and underscores.
4. Enter a **Password** and select **Create Database**.

> **Warning**
>
> Keep the password somewhere safe: it is never shown again.

**Verify:** the database appears in the list with its engine, its login and its size.

The three dots in a database's row hold **Connection String**, **Change Password** and **Delete**. **Delete** removes the database, its login and all its data for good, and websites that use it stop working.

## Step 2: Connect your application

Open the database's menu and select **Connection String**. It shows the **Host**, **Database**, **Login** and the full **Connection string**, each with a copy button. Enter these in your application's settings together with the password you set, for example in `wp-config.php` for WordPress or `.env` for Laravel.

The host is the server itself, as shown here and under **Connection details** on **Overview**. Connections from anywhere else are refused.

## Step 3: Run a query in the SQL console

1. Select **SQL Console** next to the database.
2. Enter the **Database password**.
3. Select a table's name to fill in a sample query, or write your own under **SQL**.
4. Select **Run Query**. The result appears below it.

A query that changes or deletes data asks you to confirm first, because it cannot be undone.

For tables, imports and more, select **Database Manager** next to the database; see [Database Manager on Linux hosting](/guides/linux-hosting-database-manager).

## Step 4: Change the password

In the database's menu, select **Change Password**, enter the **New password** and confirm. The old password stops working at once, so update your application's settings straight away.

## Troubleshooting

**Access denied or authentication failed.** The password in your application is not the one you set, or the user name is not the database's login shown in the list.

**Connection refused from your computer.** Databases answer only to the server itself. Run your queries in the SQL console, or let your website do the work.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many databases can I create?

As many as you need: MariaDB (MySQL) and PostgreSQL databases are unlimited on every plan. Overview shows how many you have.

### Why does the list say MySQL when my plan says MariaDB?

MariaDB is MySQL-compatible: it works with MySQL connectors and applications, so the Engine list calls it MySQL.

### Can I connect from my own computer?

No. Databases accept connections only from the server itself, so a database tool on your computer cannot reach them. Use the SQL console on your service page, or Database Manager.

### Can I see the password again?

No. The password is shown only while you type it. Change Password in the database's menu sets a new one; the old one stops working at once.

### Do databases use my disk space?

Yes. Overview shows how much of your disk space your databases use.
