# Internet radio with SonicPanel: AutoDJ, live DJs and your player

> Put your HyperDC radio on air with SonicPanel: sign in, upload music, run the AutoDJ, create DJ accounts, broadcast live from BUTT and share the HTTPS player.

Difficulty: Beginner

HyperDC **internet radio hosting** runs your station on **SonicPanel**, with Shoutcast or Icecast streaming, an **AutoDJ**, DJ accounts and an SSL stream address. You manage your radio service from the HyperDC client area, and run the station itself in SonicPanel. This guide takes you from the welcome email to a station that is on air around the clock.

## Before you start

- Your radio service is active: you see it under **Services › My Services**.
- You have the SonicPanel address, user name and password from your welcome email. SonicPanel never displays passwords; if you lost yours, use the reset link on the SonicPanel login page, or open a ticket.
- Your music, jingles and shows are MP3 files, and you hold the rights to stream them.

## Step 1: Sign in to SonicPanel

Open the SonicPanel address from your welcome email and sign in. After 5 failed attempts within an hour, SonicPanel blocks your IP address for an hour, so copy the password carefully.

**Verify:** the SonicPanel dashboard of your radio opens.

## Step 2: Add your music

**Music Library (browser)**

1. Open the **Music Library**.
2. Create a folder (for example per album or per show) and drag your MP3 files into it.
3. Drag the tracks from the library onto your playlists. Tracks linked this way use no extra space, so one file can be in many playlists.
**FTP (many files)**

1. Open **Upload MP3 by FTP** in the left menu for the connection details. FTP uses port `21`.
2. Upload MP3 files into a playlist folder, or upload a whole folder of MP3s: it becomes a new playlist.
3. Avoid uploading into the playlist that is playing now: adding or deleting files there makes the AutoDJ restart that playlist from the start.

Do not put your own files into the sample **Auto Playlist**; create your own playlists instead.

## Step 3: Start the AutoDJ

1. Open **Manage AutoDJ**, choose the playlist the AutoDJ should play and save.
2. Make sure your radio and the AutoDJ are online.
3. To play playlists at set times, use **Schedule Playlists**. For jingles, adverts and station IDs, use playlist intervals; the **On Air Mix** option plays them over the fading song, like FM radio.
4. Under **AutoDJ Interruption Settings**, decide whether a scheduled playlist starts at once (the playing song fades) or after the current song ends.

**Verify:** open your stream address in a browser or media player. You hear the AutoDJ.

## Step 4: Create DJ accounts

1. In the left menu, under **DJ Control Center**, open **Create a DJ Account**.
2. Enter a user name and a password, and choose the permissions. Give only the permissions a presenter needs: someone who can stop the radio can stop it in the middle of a show.
3. Change permissions later under **List/Edit DJ Accounts**.

DJs sign in to their own **DJ Panel** on port `2080` (for example `http://radio.example.com:2080`) to change their DJ password, upload a profile picture and see the song history.

## Step 5: Broadcast live

In your broadcasting software, such as BUTT, SAM Broadcaster, VirtualDJ, RadioBOSS or Winamp DSP:

1. Choose **Shoutcast v1** (or **Shoutcast**) as the server type, even if your radio runs Icecast or Shoutcast v2.
2. Enter your radio's server address, the **DJ port** and the **DJ password**. Leave the user name empty.
3. Set the format and a bitrate no higher than your plan allows, and start the broadcast.

In BUTT: open the settings, select **ADD**, choose **SHOUTcast**, enter the address, DJ port and DJ password, save with **ADD**, set the codec and bitrate under **Audio**, then press the play button.

**Verify:** the stream address plays your live audio. The AutoDJ must stay online while you broadcast.

> **Tip**
>
> To keep your live shows, turn on **Record Live DJ Shows** under **Manage AutoDJ**. Recordings are MP3 files under **List/Download DJ Shows**; they use your disk space and are deleted automatically at 23:59 on the first day of each month, so download the ones you want to keep.

## Step 6: Share your station

- Open **SSL Connections/Play** for your HTTPS addresses. The `https://domain:port` address works in most players and apps and carries the song titles; the direct play address ending in `/stream` suits your own HTML player.
- Embed a SonicPanel player or widget on your website with its iframe or JavaScript code.
- The radio statistics list your listeners with their IP addresses and a map.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need the AutoDJ to broadcast live?

Yes. SonicPanel's documentation says the AutoDJ must be online for a DJ to connect and stream.

### Which protocol does my encoder use?

Always Shoutcast v1 (often just called Shoutcast) in your broadcasting software, even if your radio runs Icecast or Shoutcast v2. Enter only the DJ port and DJ password, without a user name.

### Which file types can I upload?

MP3 files. Over FTP, files that are not valid MP3 audio are deleted automatically, even if their name ends in .mp3.

### Who is responsible for what I play?

You are. Read our Acceptable Use Policy before you go on air, and make sure you have the rights for the music and shows you stream.
