# Domains at HyperDC: register, renew and transfer

> How domains work at HyperDC: searching and registering, verifying the registrant email, renewals and expiry, transfers in and out, privacy and DNSSEC.

A domain is your address on the internet, for your website and your email. This guide explains the life of a domain at HyperDC: registration, verification, renewal, expiry and transfers. For the settings themselves, see [manage your domain](/guides/manage-your-domain); for DNS records, [DNS basics](/guides/dns-basics-for-a-new-domain).

## Register a domain

1. Search for the name on [domain registration](/domain-register). The result shows which extensions are available and their prices.
2. Add the domain to the cart, choose the registration period and, where the extension offers it, ID protection.
3. Check out with your account: [create an account and order](/guides/create-account-and-order).

Names with letters outside a to z (internationalised domain names, such as ü or ş) and DNSSEC are not supported by every extension; contact us before ordering one.

## Verify the registrant email

For generic domains, ICANN requires the registrar to verify the registrant's email address within 15 days of a new registration, a transfer or a change of registrant. Click the link in the verification email. A domain whose data is not verified can be suspended until it is.

**Verify:** the registration data at [lookup.icann.org](https://lookup.icann.org/) shows your domain as active, without a `clientHold` status.

## Point it somewhere

A new domain does nothing until it points to a website and mail server. Use the nameservers of your hosting plan, or set A and MX records at your DNS host: [point a domain to your server](/guides/point-domain-to-server).

## Renewal and expiry

- **Auto renew** creates a renewal invoice before the expiry date. Turn it on for every domain you need and keep a valid payment method; see [manage your domain](/guides/manage-your-domain).
- **Reminders:** for generic domains you receive renewal reminders about a month and about a week before expiry, and another shortly after.
- **After expiry:** the DNS is switched off and the website and email stop. Most generic domains can still be renewed during a short grace period. After that they enter a **30-day redemption period**, in which restoring them costs an extra fee, and then they are deleted and released for anyone to register.
- **Country-code extensions** (such as `.uk` or `.de`) follow their own registry rules.

## Transfer a domain to HyperDC

1. At your current registrar, make sure the domain is active, **unlock** it and get the **authorisation (EPP) code**. The registrar must give you the code within five days of your request.
2. Start the transfer on [domain transfer](/domain-transfer), enter the code and pay.
3. Approve the transfer if your current registrar asks. Generic transfers complete within about a week; the current registrar has five days to approve or reject, otherwise it is approved automatically.

Things that block a transfer:

- **60-day locks** after a registration, a previous transfer or a change of the registrant's name, organisation or email (generic domains).
- **Redemption** or pending deletion: restore the domain at the current registrar first.
- A **privacy service** that receives the approval email instead of you: ask the current registrar whether to switch it off first.

For generic domains a completed transfer adds one year to the expiry date, within the ten-year maximum; country-code domains differ. In June 2026 the ICANN Board adopted changes to the Transfer Policy, including 30-day locks and a one-time transfer code; they take effect on a date ICANN has not yet set.

## Transfer a domain away

Use **Get EPP Code** on the domain page in the client area and disable the **Registrar Lock**, then start the transfer at the new registrar. See [manage your domain](/guides/manage-your-domain).

## Troubleshooting

**The domain does not resolve after registration.** It has no nameservers or records yet, or the registrant email is not verified. See [DNS not resolving](/guides/dns-not-resolving).

**The transfer was rejected.** Common reasons: wrong or expired EPP code, the domain is locked, or a 60-day lock applies. Check with the current registrar and start again.

**I missed the renewal.** Renew immediately in the client area; during the redemption period, open a ticket so we can tell you the restore steps.

## Next steps

- Change nameservers, lock and auto renew: [manage your domain](/guides/manage-your-domain).

## Frequently asked questions

### How long can I register a domain for?

Most extensions can be registered for one year at a time or several years at once, up to a total of ten years for generic extensions. The order form shows the periods each extension offers.

### What happens if my domain expires?

Its DNS is switched off, so the website and email stop working. Most generic domains can still be renewed for a short grace period; after that they enter a 30-day redemption period with an extra restore fee, and then they are deleted. Country-code extensions follow their own rules.

### Will my website stop working during a transfer?

No, as long as the nameservers stay the same. A transfer moves the registration, not the DNS records. Change nameservers only after the transfer if you want to.

### Is my personal data shown in WHOIS?

Public lookups for generic domains use RDAP, and personal details can be redacted. A privacy service goes further where the extension allows it; some extensions, such as .us, do not allow privacy services.

### Which registrar is my domain registered with?

HyperDC registers domains as a reseller through accredited registrar partners. The registrar of record is listed in each domain's public registration data, and we tell you whenever you ask.
