Wreckfest plans are being prepared

How big should a Wreckfest server be?

A full grid is 24 cars. Players, AI bots and heavy damage settings decide the load.

Bugbear publishes no server hardware figures, only bandwidth advice: on a slow upload, start with about 8 drivers. These are starting points.

Events, rules and admin

Everything a Wreckfest server reads from server_config.cfg and the chat commands that change it live.

Event rotation

Add el_add lines to build a rotation of tracks and modes, switch it with /eventloop, and let players vote on the next track.

Race rules

Set laps, time limit, damage from normal to extreme, car class or car limits, weather and the grid order.

AI bots

Add bots with bots= or /bot at novice, amateur or expert level; they leave when players join.

Cup mode

Carry points over several events with cup_mode=1 and manage the cup with /cupon, /cupoff and /cupreset.

Admins and moderators

List admins in admin_steam_ids, or promote players in game with /admin and /op. Kick, ban and restart from the chat.

Workshop mods

List mod folders on the mods line and copy them from the Workshop content folder into the server’s mods folder.

Set up your Wreckfest server

Four steps to the first green light.

  1. Pick a grid size

Up to 24 drivers: choose the column for your lobby.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Build your event list

Edit server_config.cfg: name, password, admins, tracks, modes and bots, plus el_add lines for the rotation.

  4. Invite your drivers

Drivers find the server in the in-game server browser and join the lobby.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Is there an official Wreckfest dedicated server?

Yes. Wreckfest Dedicated Server is a free tool, app 361580, installed with SteamCMD and an anonymous login; you do not need to own the game. It runs on Windows.

Which ports does the server use?

Bugbear’s setup guide lists UDP 27015, 27016 and 33540 and TCP 27015. 33540 is the game port; 27015 and 27016 are used for Steam and server queries.

How many drivers can join?

Up to 24, set with max_players. Bugbear advises raising the limit only as far as the upload bandwidth allows.

Which file holds the settings?

At the first start, initial_server_config.cfg is copied to server_config.cfg, which is the file the server reads. Edit server_config.cfg for the name, password, track, game mode, bots, damage, car restrictions and weather.

How do I set up a track rotation?

Add one el_add line per event to server_config.cfg and turn the rotation on or off with /eventloop. Track voting lets players choose the next event.

Which admin commands are there?

In chat: /kick, /ban, /bansteamid, /unban, /restart, /bot, /op, /admin, /password, /servername and /eventloop, among others. In the server console, list, bans, tracks, gamemodes and cars show what is available.

How do I add admins?

Put their SteamID64s into admin_steam_ids in server_config.cfg, or promote players in game with /admin or /op for moderators.

Can I use Workshop mods?

Yes. Enable the mods line in server_config.cfg and list the mod folders, then copy them from the Workshop content folder into the server’s mods folder. Check each mod’s notes on whether players need it too.

What is cup mode?

Cup mode, turned on with cup_mode=1, carries points over several events. Admins control it with /cupon, /cupoff, /cupreset and point adjustments.

Can I keep random players out?

Set a password in server_config.cfg or with /password, and set exclude_from_quickplay=1 so Quick Match does not send players to your server.

Does the server run on Linux?

The server is built for Windows. Community setups run it on Linux with Wine and a virtual display, which Bugbear does not support.
