## How big should a UT2004 server be?

UT2004 is light by today’s standards. Slots, bots and large Onslaught maps decide the load.

| Feature | **Small** Up to 8 slots | Recommended **Standard** Up to 16 slots | **Large** Up to 32 slots |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Memory (RAM)Memory for the map, the players, bots and mutators. | 1 GB | 1–2 GB | 2 GB |
| CPU coresThe server runs the match on one thread, so a fast core matters more than many cores. | 1 | 1–2 | 2 |
| Disk spaceThe game files take about 6 GB; leave room for custom maps, mutators and log files. | 10 GB | 15 GB | 20 GB |
| BotsBots fill empty slots and are simulated on the server, so many bots add CPU load. | Optional | Fill empty slots | Fill large maps |
| Typical use | Duels and small Deathmatch or CTF | Clan CTF and team games | Onslaught and Assault with full teams |

Epic published no server hardware figures; these are starting points. Bots, mutators and big vehicle maps raise the load.

## Game types, master servers and custom content

Everything that keeps a UT2004 server alive and easy to find today.

### Every stock game type

Start the server with the game class you want, such as Onslaught.ONSOnslaughtGame or XGame.xCTFGame, and switch maps and game types from WebAdmin.

### Community master servers

With patch 3374, set ServerActors to IpDrv.MasterServerLauncher and list masters such as ut2004master.333networks.com on port 28902.

### OldUnreal patch 3374

OldUnreal maintains UT2004 with Epic’s approval. The 3374 previews run on 64-bit Windows, Linux and macOS and fix server issues such as rising CPU use.

### Fast map downloads

Compress custom packages to .uz2 with ucc compress and point RedirectToURL at a web server, so players download maps quickly.

### WebAdmin

Turn on the web server in UT2004.ini to change maps, kick players and edit settings from a browser.

### Mutators and mods

Add mutators to the start line and list the packages players must download under ServerPackages.

## Set up your UT2004 server

Four steps from the first choice to the first frag.

1. ### Pick game types and slots
Onslaught, CTF or Deathmatch: choose the size with the table above.
2. ### Pick a location
Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations; ping matters in a shooter.
3. ### Set the master servers and admin
Add community master servers, set AdminName and AdminPassword and turn on WebAdmin if you want it.
4. ### Invite your players
Players find the server in the in-game browser through a community master server, or open the console and type open with the address.

### Can players still find UT2004 servers online?

Yes. Epic switched off the official online services in January 2023, and community master servers such as 333networks and OpenSpy took over. OldUnreal’s 3374 patch lists them already; on Epic’s last build, 3369, you add them to UT2004.ini by hand.

### Which ports does a UT2004 server use?

UDP 7777 for the game, UDP 7778 and 7787 for server queries, and an outgoing TCP connection to port 28902 for the master server. WebAdmin listens on the TCP port you set as ListenPort.

### How do I list my server on a community master server?

With patch 3374, replace ServerActors=IpDrv.MasterServerUplink with IpDrv.MasterServerLauncher and add MasterServerList entries under \[IpDrv.MasterServerLink\], for example ut2004master.333networks.com on port 28902. Remove the old ut2004master.epicgames.com line.

### What is OldUnreal’s patch 3374?

A community patch made with Epic’s approval. It runs on 64-bit Windows, Linux and macOS and fixes server issues. In October 2026 it is still a public preview; preview 23 from July 2026 is the last one before the release candidate.

### How many players can join?

The stock UT2004.ini allows 16 players and 2 spectators. Raise MaxPlayers or start the map with ?MaxPlayers=; ?MinPlayers= lets bots fill the empty slots.

### How do I enable WebAdmin?

In UT2004.ini, set bEnabled=True under \[UWeb.WebServer\] and choose a ListenPort. Log in with the AdminName and AdminPassword set under \[Engine.AccessControl\]; the admin name must not be empty.

### How do I add custom maps and mutators?

Copy maps into the Maps folder and other packages into System, Textures or the matching folder. Packages that players must download go into ServerPackages. Linux servers treat file names as case-sensitive.

### How do I make map downloads faster?

Compress your packages to .uz2 with ucc compress, upload them to a web server and set RedirectToURL and UseCompression=True under \[IpDrv.HTTPDownload\]. Players then download from that web server instead of the game server. Music in OGG format is not redirected.

### How do I protect the server with a password?

Set GamePassword under \[Engine.AccessControl\] in UT2004.ini. Players then enter it when they join.

### Which game types can the server run?

Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Vehicle CTF, Double Domination, Bombing Run, Onslaught, Assault, Invasion, Mutant and Last Man Standing, each started with its game class such as XGame.xCTFGame.

### How do players get the game today?

UT2004 is no longer sold on Steam. OldUnreal, working with Epic’s approval, offers full-game installers for Windows and Linux that download the game files and apply its patch.
