The Riftbreaker co-op server hosting

Build your base on Galatea 37 with friends on a server that does not depend on the host’s PC. EXOR’s free dedicated server runs the co-op campaign, Open Campaign or Survival, with your own difficulty and password.

  • Official dedicated server from EXOR Studios
  • Co-op for up to 4 players
  • Open Campaign, Story and Survival modes
  • Password, RCON and pause when empty
Playersserver_max_players_count can go higher, but EXOR warns that each extra player hurts performance.

The Riftbreaker plans are being prepared

Tell us your group size and the mode you play, and our team will reply with the options. Or open a ticket and we will let you know when the plans are online.

How big should a Riftbreaker server be?

The server renders nothing, so EXOR points to CPU and RAM. Large bases and big waves of creatures are what raise the load.

EXOR publishes no hardware figures and notes that server hardware decides performance; these starting points follow common practice for a 4-player base-building game.

Modes, settings and remote control

The whole server is set up in one config.cfg file next to DedicatedServer.exe.

Three modes

Open Campaign, the co-op Story campaign or Survival, each with its own difficulty from easy to brutal.

Name and password

Set server_name and server_password, and choose with server_broadcast_enabled whether the server shows in the browser.

Pause when empty

server_pause_game_when_empty stops progress while nobody is online, so your base is safe overnight.

RCON

Set server_rcon_password; players who enter it in the console can send commands to the server.

Load a save

Continue an existing game with mission_save. EXOR recommends backing up save files before you switch.

Set up your Riftbreaker server

Four steps from the config file to your first rift jump together.

  1. Choose a mode

Open Campaign, Story or Survival, and the difficulty that suits your team.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your team from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Edit config.cfg

Keep app_mode set to server, then set the campaign, mission, difficulty, name, password and RCON password.

  4. Join from the browser

Players on the same game version find the server in the in-game server browser and enter the password.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Does The Riftbreaker have a dedicated server?

Yes. EXOR Studios released a free dedicated server in December 2025, after online co-op arrived with update 2.0 in August 2025. It installs from Steam’s Tools or with an anonymous SteamCMD login and does not need a copy of the game.

How many players can join?

Four players are officially supported. server_max_players_count accepts more, but EXOR warns that every player above four significantly hurts performance.

Which modes can the server run?

Open Campaign, the co-op Story campaign and Survival. Each has its own difficulty levels, from easy to brutal. Open Campaign, added in March 2026, skips the story and lets you start in any base-game biome.

How do I configure the server?

Edit config.cfg next to DedicatedServer.exe and start the server with cli=1 config=config.cfg. app_mode must stay set to server; campaign, mission and difficulty pick the game, and the server_ settings set the name, password, player limit and more.

Can I continue our existing game?

Yes. Point mission_save at the save you want to load. Back up your save files first, as EXOR recommends.

Does the game keep running when everyone leaves?

Only if you want it to. server_pause_game_when_empty pauses progress while no one is connected.

Why can my friends not join after a game update?

The server and the game must run the same version, and the server is updated separately from the game. Update it after every patch; the build number is shown at the bottom of the game’s menus.

How do I use RCON?

Set server_rcon_password in config.cfg. A player enters the same password in the game console and then sends commands as rcon followed by the command.

Does the Riftbreaker server run on Linux?

EXOR builds and tests the server for Windows. It says the server will likely run under Linux but has not tested it, so Windows is the supported choice.
