## How much memory does a Terraria server need?

Vanilla Terraria is light; world size, player count and tModLoader mods are what raise the need.

| Memory (RAM)Working memory for the world, the players and every mod. Leave headroom: memory use grows as players explore. | 1 GB | 2 GB | 4 GB | 6 GB+ |
| CPU coresThe game simulates the world mostly on one thread, so fast cores matter more than many cores. | 1–2 | 2 | 2–3 | 3+ |

Starting points: the Terraria Wiki notes about 500 MB of free memory for a small vanilla world, rising with world size and players. tModLoader mods add more.

## Vanilla, tModLoader and TShock

Choose how your world runs. Every player needs the same setup: vanilla players cannot join a tModLoader server.

### Official server

The dedicated server from Re-Logic runs vanilla worlds with your settings for difficulty, password and player limit.

### tModLoader

A free, separate app on Steam for modded Terraria. Modded worlds and characters are kept apart from vanilla ones.

### TShock

A community server toolkit with permissions, groups, server-side characters and item bans for public servers.

### World sizes and seeds

Create small, medium or large worlds with your own name and seed, or bring an existing .wld file.

### Difficulty modes

Classic, Expert, Master and Journey. Journey worlds have their own permissions for what players may change.

### Crossplay roadmap

Today the PC server is for PC players. Re-Logic plans console access to dedicated servers with update 1.4.6.

## Set up your Terraria server

Four steps to a world your friends can join any time.

1. ### Choose vanilla or tModLoader
Decide whether your group plays the official game or tModLoader with mods, then pick the size from the table above.
2. ### Pick a location
Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations.
3. ### Create or upload your world
Set the world name, size, difficulty and seed in serverconfig.txt, or point the world setting at your own .wld file.
4. ### Join with the address
In Terraria choose Multiplayer, Join via IP, pick a character, then enter the address, port 7777 and the password.

### How many players can join a Terraria server?

The server accepts between 1 and 255 players; set maxplayers in serverconfig.txt or start it with -players. Recent versions default to 16. Large groups on big worlds need more memory and CPU.

### Can I play with mods?

Yes, with tModLoader, a free separate app on Steam. The server runs tModLoader’s own dedicated server and every player needs tModLoader with the same mods; vanilla players cannot join a modded server.

### Does tModLoader support Terraria 1.4.5?

Not yet. In October 2026 the stable tModLoader release is still based on Terraria 1.4.4 and its 1.4.5 port is in progress. Vanilla servers run 1.4.5 today.

### Can I upload my existing world?

Yes. Worlds are .wld files, on Windows in Documents\\My Games\\Terraria\\Worlds. Put the file in the server’s world folder and select it with the world setting. tModLoader keeps its worlds in its own tModLoader folder.

### Can console or mobile players join?

Today the PC dedicated server is for PC players. Re-Logic’s first crossplay phase, planned for update 1.4.6, lets console players connect to dedicated servers over the internet.

### How do I keep the world saved?

The server saves on its own from time to time and when the last player leaves. Stop it with the exit command, which saves first; closing the window or using exit-nosave can lose progress.

### How do I kick or ban players?

Use kick and ban in the server console; bans are written to banlist.txt. The vanilla server has no admin roles, which is why public servers often add TShock for permissions and groups.

### What is TShock?

TShock is a community server toolkit with anti-cheat checks, server-side characters, permission groups and item bans. Its latest release supports Terraria 1.4.5.8.

### Which settings go into serverconfig.txt?

The world name and file, autocreate size (1 small, 2 medium, 3 large), difficulty (0 classic to 3 journey), seed, maxplayers, port, password, motd, banlist and secure for extra cheat checks.
