How big should a Stormworks server be?
Geometa publishes its own server requirements. Physics and big vehicles load the CPU, so clock speed matters most.

Settings, addons and access control
Everything a Stormworks server reads from server_config.xml, set before you create the world.
server_config.xml
Name, password, player limit, port, save name, physics timestep and wildlife live in one file, created at the first start.
Workshop addons and mods
List missions under playlists and mods under mods. Both apply when a new world is created, and players download the mods when they connect.
World creation
Set the seed, starting island, starting money, DLC content and custom menu options such as infinite fuel or no clip.
Admins and authorised players
Add Steam IDs to the admins list, and to the authorised list for players who may spawn and despawn at workbenches.
Whitelist and bans
One entry in the whitelist makes the server whitelist-only. ?ban adds players to the blacklist, which you can edit to unban.
Physics timestep
physics_timestep sets 60, 120 or 180 physics steps per second, or 0 for automatic.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the Stormworks dedicated server come from?
Since v1.9.21 in December 2023, server.exe and server64.exe ship with the game itself, and Geometa announced it would retire the separate server app after February 2024. The server is installed from the game’s own app 573090 with a Steam account that owns Stormworks.
Which ports does the server use?
The port value in server_config.xml, 25564 by default, covers the game and query ports. Connections use Steam P2P, which can use any port from 40000 to 63000. Each extra server needs its own port range.
How many players can join?
max_players is 32 by default. Every player adds about 50–300 Kb/s of upload traffic depending on their vehicles.
What hardware does the server need?
Geometa’s minimum is a 2 GHz CPU, 4 GB of free RAM and 10 Mbps; it recommends a 4–5 GHz CPU, 8 GB of free RAM and 20 Mbps with a static IP. A server uses about 2–3 threads, and high clock speed matters most.
Where are the server settings?
In server_config.xml, created at the first start in the folder given with +server_dir. Do not edit it while the server runs. It holds the name, password, save name, player limit, physics timestep, wildlife and the world creation settings.
How do I make someone an admin?
Add their Steam64 ID to the admins list in server_config.xml, or use ?add_admin with their peer ID in chat. ?add_auth gives workbench rights, and ?kick, ?ban and ?save are available to admins.
How do I add Workshop missions and mods?
List mission folders under playlists and mod folders under mods in server_config.xml. Both apply only when a new world is created. Players download the mods automatically when they connect.
How do I choose or keep the world?
save_name picks the world from the server’s save folder. If it is empty or no save has that name, the server creates a new world. ?save without a name writes to autosave_server.
How do the whitelist and bans work?
As soon as the whitelist has one entry, only listed players can join. ?ban adds a player to the blacklist; edit the list by hand to lift a ban.
Which world settings cannot be undone?
clear_fow, which removes the fog of war, and unlock_all_islands cannot be reversed once the world exists. settings_menu must be on for players to use the custom menu.
Does the server run on Linux?
Geometa supports Windows only: Windows 7, 10 and 11 and Windows Server 2016 and 2019. On Linux it runs only through Wine, which Geometa does not support.
