How big should an rFactor 2 server be?

Every car on the grid, human or AI, adds work for the server, and every installed car and track adds disk.

Studio 397 publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow common practice for racing servers. Content packages decide most of the disk.

Content, race control and instances

An rFactor 2 server runs the content you install on it; the race setup wizard picks the event.

Workshop packages

Download Workshop items for the game with SteamCMD, copy them to the Packages folder and install them with ModMgr.

Race events

The server wizard selects the event, cars, tracks and the session options for your race.

AI and driver swaps

Add AI cars to a multiplayer session and let team-mates swap drivers in endurance races.

Voting and ban lists

Players can vote on session actions, and boot and ban lists can be shared between servers.

Several instances

Copy the player profile, give it its own ports and start each instance with its own profile.

Set up your rFactor 2 server

Four steps from the content list to the green flag.

  1. List your content

Collect the Workshop items for the cars and tracks of your series and pick the size from the table above.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your drivers from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Install the packages

Copy the packages to the Packages folder, install them with ModMgr and set the ports in Multiplayer.JSON.

  4. Start the race

Choose the event, cars and track in the server wizard; drivers find the server in the in-game list.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Is there an official rFactor 2 dedicated server?

Yes. The rFactor 2 dedicated server is a free Steam tool (app 400300) that installs with an anonymous SteamCMD login. It needs no Steam client and registers with Steam, so it appears in the server list.

Which ports does rFactor 2 use?

The simulation port 54297 on UDP and TCP, the HTTP port 64297 on TCP, and the two Steam ports after it, 64298 and 64299 on UDP. They are set in Multiplayer.JSON.

How do I add cars and tracks?

The server has no Steam account, so it does not subscribe to Workshop items. Download them with SteamCMD for the game’s app 365960, copy the files to the Packages folder and install them with ModMgr.

Do drivers need the same content?

Yes. Every driver needs the cars and tracks the server runs, so share your Workshop list with your league before race night.

Can I add AI cars to an online race?

Yes. rFactor 2 lets you add AI to multiplayer sessions, which helps fill the grid for practice or endurance races.

Does rFactor 2 support driver swaps?

Yes. Driver swaps work in multiplayer, so teams can share a car in endurance events.

Can I run more than one server?

Yes. Copy the player profile folder, give the copy its own ports in Multiplayer.JSON and start each instance with its own profile.

How do I keep order in a race?

Use the voting system for session actions and the boot and ban lists, which can be shared between your servers.

Is rFactor 2 still updated?

rFactor 2 is still sold on Steam. Studio 397’s latest content update was the free Formula E 2024/2025 pack in March 2025.
