How big should a Reign of Kings server be?

Castles, sieges and player count drive the load; a kingdom full of stone walls needs more than a fresh map.

CodeHatch publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow common practice for a Unity survival server of its era.

Kingdom rules and admin tools

The server writes its config files into the Configuration folder on the first start.

ServerSettings.cfg

Server name, password, the listening port and the starting level.

Permission groups

Permissions.cfg defines administrators and your own groups; most changes are made with in-game commands.

Whitelist, bans and mutes

Whitelist.cfg, BannedPlayers.cfg and the chat and voice mute lists, managed with commands such as /help whitelist and /help ban.

Server-side values

Values in the Mods folder change gameplay for every player without client mods; older saves can keep some old values.

Auto-update and restarts

ConsoleSettings.cfg handles auto-update checks, remote console, auto-restart and crash protection.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Is there an official Reign of Kings server?

Yes. The Reign of Kings Dedicated Server is a free Steam tool (app 381690) for Windows that installs with an anonymous SteamCMD login.

Which ports does the server use?

The game port 7350 and the Steam port 27015, on UDP and TCP. Both are set in ServerSettings.cfg; a second server on the same machine needs its own game, ping and RCON ports.

Where are the server settings?

In the Configuration folder, created on the first start. ServerSettings.cfg holds the name, password and port; ConsoleSettings.cfg the update, remote console and restart options; the other files hold permissions, users, whitelist, bans and mutes.

How do I make someone an admin?

Permissions.cfg defines the administrator group and any groups you add. Most changes are made with in-game commands; /help lists them by topic.

Can I run a whitelist-only kingdom?

Yes. Whitelist.cfg holds the allowed players; manage it with the whitelist commands shown by /help whitelist.

Can I change the gameplay balance?

Yes, through server-side modding: values in the server’s Mods folder change gameplay for every player, without mods on their side. Some values can be kept by older saves.

Does the server update itself?

It can. ConsoleSettings.cfg has an autoUpdate option that checks for new builds every 300 seconds by default, plus auto-restart and crash protection.

Is Reign of Kings still developed?

The game is still sold on Steam, but the server was last updated in August 2019. Expect a stable game without new content.

What is the game about?

Reign of Kings is a medieval sandbox where players form guilds, build castles, wage war, capture other players and compete for the throne; players outside the King’s Guild pay taxes on what they gather.
