How big should a King Arthur’s Gold server be?

KAG is light on memory: the official wiki recommends 512 MB and one 2 GHz core. Player count drives upload bandwidth more than anything else.

Game modes, admin tools and mods

Everything runs from the game folder: autoconfig.cfg for the rules, the console for admin work and the Mods folder for custom content.

Four game modes

Capture the Flag, Take the Halls, Team Deathmatch and Sandbox. Choose the start mode with sv_gamemode; the default config starts TDM.

Map cycle

Point sv_mapcycle at a map cycle file, for example Base/Maps/mapcycle.cfg, to rotate your maps.

Remote admin

Set sv_rconpassword, open the console with HOME and log in with \rcon \login; then kick, ban or load maps. sv_tcpr 1 adds remote admin over TCP.

Server mods

Put each mod in its own folder under Mods and list the folder name in mods.cfg, one per line. Players download missing mods when they join.

Start options

The ip, port and slots start options override autoconfig.cfg, which helps when several servers share one machine.

Self-updating server

The server updates itself over the web and registers with the server list, so it needs outgoing access on TCP 80 and 443.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
How many players can join a King Arthur’s Gold server?

The default autoconfig.cfg allows 16 players with sv_maxplayers. You can raise it there or with the slots start option; the Steam store page advertises battles of up to 32 players.

Which ports does the server use?

50301 UDP for the game and 50301 TCP for remote admin, both changeable, plus 50328 UDP for client communication. The server also needs outgoing TCP 80 for updates and 443 for the server list and sign-in.

Is the game free to play?

Yes. King Arthur’s Gold is free to play on Steam for Windows and Linux, and the dedicated server comes with the game: dedicatedserver.bat on Windows, dedicatedserver.sh on Linux.

How do I log in as an admin?

Set sv_rconpassword in autoconfig.cfg. In the game, press HOME to open the console and type \rcon \login followed by the password. After that, commands such as \rcon \kick, \rcon \ban and \rcon \loadmap work.

How do I install mods?

Copy each mod into its own folder under Mods and add the folder name to mods.cfg, one per line; names are case-sensitive. Players who join download the mods they are missing.

How do I change the game mode?

Set sv_gamemode in autoconfig.cfg to the mode you want, for example CTF or TTH, and restart the server. A mod with its own game mode file can override this setting.

Will my server appear in the server list?

Yes, while sv_register is 1, which is the default. The server registers with the master list over TCP 443.

Why did my changes in the Base folder disappear?

Game updates replace the Base folder. Keep your own scripts and changes in a mod under the Mods folder so they survive updates.

How much bandwidth does a KAG server use?

The KAG wiki estimates about 0.3 kB/s of upload to each player for every other player, and 0.5 kB/s of download from each player. A full 32-player server sends roughly 300 kB/s.
