What a horror server needs

Horror servers are often small but intense: plan for the busiest night, with every enemy on the map at once.

Small groups, exact limits

Many horror games are built for a handful of players. Check the player limit on the game page before you invite more.

Hordes need memory

Zombie hordes and many active enemies, as on 7 Days to Die blood moons or large Project Zomboid maps, raise memory and CPU use.

Mods and Workshop maps

Project Zomboid loads Workshop mods and maps on the server, and 7 Days to Die uses modlets on PC. Every player usually needs the same mods.

Keep your survivors safe

Permadeath and long runs make saves valuable. Back up the world before updates and before you add mods.

Difficulty and rules

Server settings decide zombie speed, loot, day length and more. Agree on them with your group before the first night.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
How much RAM does a horror game server need?

It depends on the game and the map. The Forest starts at about 3 GB, while 7 Days to Die and Project Zomboid with large maps, many players or mods need 6–16 GB or more. Each game page has a size table with sources.

Can we continue our horror co-op world on a dedicated server?

Often, yes: copy the save from the host’s computer to the server. Each game page explains where the save is stored and what has to match.

Do all players on a horror server need the same mods?

Usually, yes. Project Zomboid players get the server’s Workshop mods through Steam when they join; in other games every player installs them by hand. The game page says which applies.

Can console players join a horror server?

In 7 Days to Die, PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series players can play together on crossplay servers within the game’s crossplay rules. Project Zomboid and The Forest servers are for PC players.

How do I keep strangers out of my horror server?

Set a server password or a whitelist, and give admin rights only to people you trust. Each game page names the settings to use.

Which location should I choose for a horror server?

The one closest to most of your group. Game servers run in 20 locations; a shorter distance means lower latency when the horde arrives.

Planning a long campaign with your group?

Tell us the game, your group size and the mods you want, and our team will suggest a server size.
