What a shooter server needs

In shooters the server decides every hit. Latency, a fast CPU core and clear rules matter more than raw size.

Latency comes first

Every millisecond counts in a firefight. Choose the location closest to most of your players from our 20 game server locations.

A fast core for the tick rate

The tick rate is how often the server updates the match each second. Many shooter servers run the match on one main thread, so a fast CPU core matters more than many cores.

Plugins and server mods

Admin tools and game modes run on the server, for example Metamod:Source with CounterStrikeSharp for Counter-Strike 2 or SourceMod for older Source games.

Maps and Workshop content

Custom maps and Workshop collections are loaded by the server and usually downloaded by every player. Keep disk room for them.

Slots for your busiest night

A competitive match needs only a few slots, a community server for large battles many more. Size the server for the busiest evening, not the average one.

Rules and admin rights

Set the password, the admins and the match settings before you invite players. Each game page names the config files and commands that matter.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
What does tick rate mean for a shooter server?

The tick rate is how many times per second the server updates the game and sends the new state to players. A higher rate makes hits feel more precise but needs more CPU. Each game sets its own rules; Counter-Strike 2 servers run at 64 ticks with Valve’s sub-tick updates.

How many players can a shooter server hold?

It depends on the game and the mode. A competitive Counter-Strike 2 match is five against five, while a Counter-Strike 2 community server can have up to 64 slots. Each game page lists its limit and default.

Can I install plugins and custom maps on a shooter server?

Yes, as far as each game allows. Counter-Strike 2 uses Metamod:Source with CounterStrikeSharp, older Source games use SourceMod, and many games load custom maps from the Steam Workshop. The game pages explain the details.

Does a shooter server need a Steam login token?

Some Steam games use a Game Server Login Token. Counter-Strike 2 needs one for a public server, and Garry’s Mod servers without one rank far lower in the server list. You create it on Steam’s game server account page and add it to the server settings.

Can I run a military simulation server?

Yes. Arma 3 and Arma Reforger run as dedicated servers with Workshop mods, and tactical shooters such as Squad have their own dedicated server. Large mod sets need more memory and disk, and every player needs the same mods.

Which location gives a shooter server the lowest ping?

The one closest to most of your players. Game servers run in 20 locations; when your players are spread out, choose the location in the middle of the group.
