Factorio plans are being prepared

How big should a Factorio server be?

Your factory decides the load, not your player count. A megabase or Space Age platforms need fast cores and memory long before many players do.

Wube publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow common practice. The factory you build matters more than the player count.

Space Age, mods and server tools

The headless server is the full game without graphics, so every multiplayer feature is there.

Space Age

The free headless download includes the Space Age content; it is switched on through its built-in mods: Space Age, Quality and Elevated Rails.

Mod portal

Every player needs the same game version and the same mods; the game compares them when players join.

server-settings.json

Name, description, visibility, password, player limit, autosaves, AFK kick and pausing rules.

Admins, whitelist and bans

server-adminlist.json names admins; a whitelist and banlist can be loaded with their own options.

RCON

Start the server with --rcon-port and --rcon-password to run console commands from outside the game.

Auto-pause

By default the game pauses when nobody is connected, so your factory waits for your team.

Set up your Factorio server

Four steps from the first choice to the first conveyor belt.

  1. Pick a size

Vanilla, Space Age or a big mod pack: choose with the table above.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your team from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Bring a save or create a map

Upload your save, or create a new map with your map generation settings; then set server-settings.json and your mods.

  4. Connect

Choose Multiplayer, Connect to address and enter the address; add the port if it is not 34197.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
How many players can join a Factorio server?

As many as your factory and server can handle: max_players 0 in server-settings.json means no limit, and games with well over 100 players have been run. Most teams play with far fewer.

Does the server include Space Age?

Yes. The headless download is free and comes with the Space Age content. A Space Age game enables its built-in mods, and every player needs the same mods to join, so all players need the expansion.

Which port does the server use?

UDP 34197 by default; change it with --port. Factorio also supports DNS SRV records, so players can connect with a domain name.

Can I upload my single-player save?

Yes. Upload the .zip save and start the server with it, or with --start-server-load-latest for the newest save. New maps are created with --create and optional map generation settings.

How do mods work on a server?

Put the mods into the server’s mod folder. Every player must run the same game version and the same mods; the game checks this when they join. Mods that do not change the game state, such as some interface mods, do not need to match.

How do I add admins?

List their Factorio user names in server-adminlist.json, or promote a player with /promote in the console; the file is created and updated automatically.

Can I use RCON?

Yes. Start the server with --rcon-port and --rcon-password, then connect with any RCON client to run console commands.

Can I restrict who joins?

Yes. Set a game_password, or turn on the whitelist with --use-server-whitelist and a whitelist file. require_user_verification, on by default, makes players log in with a factorio.com account.

How do I list the server publicly?

Set visibility to public in server-settings.json and add the user name and a token of a factorio.com account; public listing needs those credentials.

Does the factory keep running when everyone is offline?

Not by default: auto_pause is on, so the game pauses when nobody is connected. Start the server with --no-auto-pause if the factory should keep running.
