How big should a Day of Dragons server be?

Player count decides the load: every dragon in the air is simulated by the server.

The developers publish no server hardware figures. These starting points are our conservative estimate for an Unreal Engine survival server.

Admins, access and server rules

The server reads its rules from Game.ini; admins manage the rest from inside the game.

Game.ini

In the DragonsGameInstance section: the player limit, your admins and the allowlist. Stop the server before editing it.

Admins

Add one sServerAdmins line per admin with their Steam64 ID; admins open the admin panel with /admin.

Allowlist

Set bServerUseJoinList to true and add one sServerJoinList line per player to keep the server private.

PvE or PvP

On PvE servers, players can switch PvP on for themselves with /pvp.

Server browser

Players find the server under Play in the main menu and can filter the list by its name.

Regular updates

The game is in Early Access; the 1.2 series ended in July 2026 and work moved to update 1.3. Keep the server on the same version as players.

Set up your Day of Dragons server

Four steps to your first flight.

  1. Pick a size

Choose the player limit and the size from the table above.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Edit Game.ini

Set iServerMaxPlayers, add your admins and, for a private server, turn on the allowlist.

  4. Find it in the browser

Give the server a unique name; players open Play, filter by that name and double-click to join.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
How do I set the player limit?

With iServerMaxPlayers in Game.ini, in the DragonsGameInstance section. Stop the server before you edit the file, then start it again.

Where is Game.ini?

In Dragons/Saved/Config, in the folder for the server’s operating system, for example LinuxServer on Linux.

How do I add admins?

Add a line sServerAdmins= followed by the player’s Steam64 ID for each admin. In the game, admins open the admin panel with /admin and check with /anyadmins who is online.

Can I make the server private?

Yes. Set bServerUseJoinList=true and add one sServerJoinList= line with a Steam64 ID for every player who may join.

How do players find my server?

Through the in-game server list under Play. Give the server a unique name so players can filter for it; joining by IP address is not supported in the game today.

Is PvP possible on a PvE server?

Yes, by choice: on PvE servers players can toggle PvP for themselves with the /pvp command.

Which chat commands are there?

Commands start with /: /players lists who is online, /server shows the server name, /version the game version, /stuck frees a stuck dragon, and /c, /g and /l send clan, group and local chat.

Does the server run on Linux?

Yes. The Day of Dragons Dedicated Server is published on Steam for Windows and Linux.

Do I need to update the server after a patch?

Yes. Day of Dragons is in Early Access and patches often change the server too, as the July 2026 server hotfix did. Players can only join a server on the same version.
