CS:GO legacy servers for the final 2023 build

Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO in September 2023, and Valve no longer updates the old game. Its final build still installs, so you can keep a server for LAN events, private matches or a mod your group still plays.

CS:GO legacy plans are being prepared

Tell us what you want to run on the legacy build, your slot count and plugins, and our team will reply with the options. For current Counter-Strike, ask us about a CS2 server.

How big should a CS:GO legacy server be?

The server download is large, so plan the disk first; slots and plugins decide CPU and memory.

Valve publishes no server hardware figures; these starting points follow the size of the final build and common practice for Source servers.

What still runs on the legacy build

The final build is frozen: it no longer changes, and neither do the tools around it. That makes it predictable for events, and limited for anything that needs Valve’s services.

The final server build

SteamCMD still installs the CS:GO dedicated server, app 740, for Windows and Linux; its last update dates from October 2023.

Classic game modes

Competitive, casual, wingman, deathmatch, arms race and demolition, set with game_type and game_mode.

SourceMod

Community plugins for admin tools, practice modes and retakes, loaded through Metamod:Source.

Workshop maps

The server can start Workshop maps and collections with host_workshop_map and host_workshop_collection.

No updates, no new content

Valve moved all development to CS2. Features that relied on Valve’s online services may not work on the legacy build.

Moving to CS2

For current matchmaking rules, sub-tick play and new maps, run a Counter-Strike 2 server instead.

Set up a CS:GO legacy server

Four steps, with every player on the same final build.

  1. Check that legacy is right for you

Events, private matches or a mod that never moved to CS2? Then pick the size with the table above.

  2. Pick a location

Choose the one closest to your players from our 20 game server locations.

  3. Set the mode and plugins

Choose game_type and game_mode, write server.cfg and add SourceMod if you need admin tools.

  4. Install the legacy client

Players switch Counter-Strike 2 to the csgo_legacy branch in Steam, start the Legacy Version of CS:GO and connect from the console.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Is CS:GO still supported?

No. Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO in September 2023. The final CS:GO build is still available, but Valve no longer updates it or its dedicated server, which were last changed in October 2023.

Why run a CS:GO server today?

For LAN events and private matches on a version that never changes, for community mods and maps that were not moved to CS2, or for players whose PCs do not meet CS2’s requirements. For current Counter-Strike, choose a CS2 server.

How do players get the legacy client?

In Steam, open the properties of Counter-Strike 2, go to Betas and select the csgo_legacy branch. Steam then installs the Legacy Version of CS:GO, which matches the final server build.

Does official matchmaking work on the legacy version?

Do not plan on it. Valve’s matchmaking, rankings and updates moved to CS2. A legacy server is a community server: players join it directly with its address.

Which game modes can I run?

Casual (game_type 0, game_mode 0), competitive (0, 1), wingman (0, 2), arms race (1, 0), demolition (1, 1) and deathmatch (1, 2), each with its map group.

Can I run 128 tick?

Yes. Unlike CS2, the CS:GO server takes a -tickrate option; 64 is the default and 128 is common for matches. Higher tick rates need more CPU per slot.

Can I use SourceMod?

Yes. Metamod:Source and SourceMod load community plugins for admin tools, practice and retakes. Because the game no longer changes, plugins that work today keep working on this build.

How much disk space does it need?

The final dedicated server build is about 35 GB. Plan 45 GB or more so there is room for Workshop maps, demos and logs.

Should I move my community to CS2?

If your players want current maps, updates and Valve’s matchmaking rules, yes. CS2 runs on Source 2 with sub-tick updates, and its plugins use Metamod:Source with CounterStrikeSharp. Keep the legacy server only for what CS2 cannot do for you.
