Avorion plans are being prepared
Tell us your fleet size and the mods you use, and our team will reply with the options. Or open a ticket and we will let you know when the plans are online.
How big should an Avorion server be?
Avorion uses several threads: worker threads run the sectors, generator threads build new ones as players explore. More players exploring means more cores.

Based on the official wiki’s multithreading examples for 5–20 players. Boxelware publishes no memory figures; large galaxies and mods need more.
Galaxy settings, mods and admins
Everything about your galaxy lives in its own folder: settings, sectors, players and mods.
server.ini
Seed, difficulty, hardcore, infinite resources, player-to-player damage, ship and station limits, save interval and more, per galaxy.
Workshop mods
List Workshop IDs in modconfig.lua: the server downloads and updates them at every start and tells players which mods to get.
Admins
Pass your 64-bit Steam ID with --admin when the galaxy is created, so you can manage the server in game.
Access lists
Set accessListMode to blacklist or whitelist, add a password and decide whether the server is listed publicly.
RCON
Set rconPassword to manage the server remotely; RCON listens on port 27015 by default.
Default or beta
Run the default or the beta branch. Going back from beta to default will most likely corrupt the galaxy, so back up first.

Learn moreFrequently asked questions
How many players can join an Avorion server?
10 by default. Change maxPlayers in the galaxy’s server.ini or start the server with --max-players. More players exploring at once need more CPU threads.
Which ports does Avorion use?
The official wiki lists 27000 over UDP and TCP, plus 27003, 27020 and 27021 over UDP. RCON, if you enable it, listens on 27015.
Where are the galaxy settings?
In server.ini inside the galaxy folder, created when the galaxy starts for the first time. Edit it only while the server is stopped; the server overwrites it on shutdown, and a broken file is replaced with defaults and a new seed.
How do I use Workshop mods?
Create modconfig.lua in the galaxy folder and list the mods by workshopid. The server downloads and updates Workshop mods at every start and tells players which ones to download. Achievements are disabled when mods are used.
How do I make myself an admin?
Start the server with --admin and your 64-bit Steam ID when you create the galaxy. Admins can, for example, save and stop the server with /save and /stop in game.
How do I stop the server safely?
Always run /save and then /stop. Closing the console without saving can damage the galaxy.
Can I make a private server?
Yes. Set a password, switch accessListMode to whitelist and keep isListed off so the server stays out of public lists.
Which difficulty settings are there?
Difficulty goes from -3 to 3, and from 2 upwards hardcore is on, so destroyed ships cannot be rebuilt at a repair dock. You can also turn on infinite resources or change collision damage.
Does the server run on Linux?
Yes. The Avorion dedicated server (Steam app 565060) downloads anonymously with SteamCMD for Windows and Linux.
