How big a server does email marketing need?

List size, tracking data and background jobs decide the size; the sending itself is done by your email service.

Your list, your campaigns, your server

Keep subscribers and campaign data in a system you own, and pay your sending service for sending only.

Marketing automation

Mautic builds campaigns from triggers, conditions and actions, scores leads and personalises emails and landing pages.

Newsletters that scale

Listmonk sends to large lists from a small server, with templates, a visual builder and several SMTP servers.

Deliverability first

SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain, a dedicated sending service and automatic bounce handling keep your lists clean.

Consent built in

Double opt-in, one-click unsubscribe links and preference pages help you follow the email rules that apply to you.

Your data on your server

Customer records, conversations and reports stay on a server you control, in the location you choose.

Root access, your rules

Every Linux VPS, VDS and dedicated server comes with full root access: you choose the versions, the add-ons and the security settings.

Backups included

Free weekly and monthly backups come with every VPS and VDS plan. For data that changes every day, keep copies of your own as well.

Port 25 and SMTP relays

Outbound port 25 is closed by default on HyperDC VPS. For services ordered for a term of 3 months or longer, we open it on request: open a support ticket. Until then, send through an SMTP relay on port 587.

Start sending in four steps

Order the app preinstalled on your server, or install it yourself with our guide.

  1. Choose your server

Pick a VPS, VDS or dedicated server in the size from the table above and the location closest to your users.

  2. Install Mautic or Listmonk

Choose it as an app option, or follow our guide: Mautic with Composer or its Docker image, Listmonk as a binary or with Docker Compose.

  3. Add your domain and TLS

Point a subdomain such as app.example.com at the server’s IP address and serve the app over HTTPS with a free Let’s Encrypt certificate.

  4. Connect your sending service

Add the SMTP or API details of your email service, set SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain, configure bounces and send a test campaign.

Step-by-step setup guides

Install, secure and update the app with our guides, written for current Ubuntu and Debian releases.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Send us a message and our team will reply by email.
Mautic or Listmonk: which should I choose?

Listmonk if you mainly send newsletters and want something small and quick to run: one binary and PostgreSQL. Mautic if you need marketing automation: multi-step campaigns, lead scoring, forms, landing pages and CRM-style contact histories.

Can I send bulk email directly from the server?

We advise against it, even once port 25 is open. Mail from a new server address with no sending history often lands in spam, and bulk sending from it can get the address blocklisted. Send campaigns through a dedicated email service or SMTP relay instead; our terms of service apply to all mail sent from your server.

Is port 25 open on my VPS?

Outbound port 25 is closed by default on HyperDC VPS. For services ordered for a term of 3 months or longer, we open it on request: open a support ticket. Until then, send through an SMTP relay on port 587. A relay or email service also helps your mail reach the inbox.

What does Mautic 7 need?

PHP 8.2 to 8.5 with extensions such as intl, imap, zip, gd, bcmath and mbstring, MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, Apache or Nginx, and cron jobs for segments, campaigns and sending. Mautic 7 is installed and updated with Composer or the command line; browser updates were removed.

What does Listmonk need?

PostgreSQL 12 or newer and the Listmonk binary or Docker image. Run it once with --install to create the tables, serve port 9000 through a reverse proxy with HTTPS, and run --upgrade after each update, with a database backup first.

How are bounces handled?

Both tools mark addresses that bounce so you stop sending to them. Listmonk reads bounces from a POP mailbox or from webhooks of services such as Amazon SES and SendGrid; Mautic processes them through its email transport or a monitored inbox.

Can I import my existing subscribers?

Yes. Both import CSV files with field mapping. Import only people who agreed to receive your emails, keep the proof of consent, and send to a fresh list in small batches first.
