# Activepieces on your own server

> Self-host Activepieces, the open-source automation builder: flows, AI agents, human approvals and pieces that double as MCP servers, on your own server.

Build automations in a friendly flow editor, add AI agents and approval steps, and let every piece act as an MCP server for your AI tools. Run the Community Edition with PostgreSQL and Redis on a HyperDC server, preinstalled as an app option or with our guide.

- A flow editor business users can work with
- AI agents, approvals and your own model keys
- Pieces that also work as MCP servers
- Docker Compose with PostgreSQL and Redis

## Plans are being prepared

We are preparing ready-to-use plans for Activepieces. Tell us how you will use it and how many users you expect, and we will reply with a server that fits. You can also start today on a Linux VPS and install it with our guide.

## Which server size fits?

Starting points for vCPU, memory and disk. Grow the server when your data and users grow.

Activepieces asks for at least 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM for Docker Compose, and sizes production at about 0.5 vCPU and 1 GB per worker plus 2 vCPU and 4 GB for PostgreSQL. The columns follow that guidance.

## Automation your whole team can use

Approachable for business users, open for developers.

### AI agents and approvals

Add AI steps with your own Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini or Bedrock keys, and pause flows for a human approval.

### Pieces as MCP servers

Contributed pieces also become MCP servers, so AI assistants and agents can use your integrations as tools.

### Pieces in TypeScript

Write your own pieces as TypeScript packages when an integration is missing.

### Your data stays yours

Prompts, files and databases stay on a server you control, in the location you choose, instead of a shared SaaS account.

### Full root access

Install what the app needs, change any setting and run more services next to it. Nothing is locked behind a panel.

### App option or step-by-step guide

Order the server with the app installed as an option, or set it up yourself on a clean Linux server with our guide.

### Near your users

Choose a data center in the United States, Europe or Asia. The order form estimates the latency from where you are to each location.

### Backups on VPS and VDS

Free weekly and monthly backups come with VPS and VDS plans. Keep your own copies of databases and app data as well.

## From order to first login

Order the app preinstalled on your server, or install it yourself with our guide.

1. ### Pick the server
Choose a size from the table above and the data center closest to the people who will use the app.
2. ### Add Activepieces
Select Activepieces as an app option when you order, or install it on a clean Ubuntu or Debian server with our guide.
3. ### Point a domain and enable HTTPS
Create a DNS record such as app.example.com for the server and put a reverse proxy with a free Let’s Encrypt certificate in front of the app.
4. ### Create the admin account
Sign up right away: the first account becomes the platform admin. Then back up the .env file with its keys.

## Step-by-step setup guides

Install, secure and update the app with our guides, written for current Ubuntu and Debian releases.

Deploy the Activepieces automation platform from its official repository: generate secrets with the bundled script, run app, worker, PostgreSQL and Redis on 127.0.0.1 and publish it through Caddy.

### What does the Community Edition include?

Flows, AI agents, approvals, webhooks and the library of pieces, on your own server. Projects, SSO, audit logs and Git Sync belong to Activepieces’ paid editions.

### What does Activepieces need to run?

The recommended Docker Compose setup runs the app and a worker with PostgreSQL and Redis, and asks for at least 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM. A single-container hobby setup with an embedded database also exists for trying it out.

### Which keys must I keep safe?

AP\_ENCRYPTION\_KEY, AP\_JWT\_SECRET and the database password are required. Back up the .env file: without the encryption key, saved connections cannot be decrypted even from a complete database backup.

### How is it different from n8n?

Both build visual automations with AI steps. Activepieces aims at business users with a simple builder and approvals; n8n offers more low-level control and code nodes. Many teams try both on the same server.

### Can I scale Activepieces?

Yes. Add workers as your flows grow: Activepieces sizes each worker at about 0.5 vCPU and 1 GB of memory, one app container per ten workers, and PostgreSQL with 2 vCPU and 4 GB. Production setups also use S3-compatible storage for files.

### Does it work without internet access?

Activepieces documents network-gapped installations for environments that must stay offline. For most uses, a server with normal internet access is simpler, as most pieces call online services.

### Can Activepieces send email?

Yes, with the SMTP piece or with the pieces of email services such as Gmail or Outlook. Outbound port 25 is closed by default on HyperDC VPS. For services bought for a term of 3 months or longer, it is opened on request through a support ticket; until then, or instead, send through an SMTP relay on port 587.

## Automate with an open-source builder

Tell us the app, how many people will use it and where they are, and we will suggest a server for it.
